Hi all,

I have a secondary PC for mostly MAME comprised of the following ;

Pentium 3 @ 1.4Ghz
384MB SDRAM
20Gig HDD
256MB AGP ATI Radeon 9550
2x 16MB PCI 3DFX Voodoo2 in SLI
ISA Soundblaster AWE64 Gold

I am currently have an old MAME 0.67 version on there at the moment &
all was running fine until just yesterday the sound started
stuttering/slightly repeating as it was playing. The video update does
not stutter at all but the sound does. This is now happening in every
game I play in MAME so anyone out there got any ideas what could be
causing that ??
It's a weird one... got my head scratching!

Thanks!
Brad.

Thing is though, why should he have to upgrade if it worked fine
previously?

Sounds like you installed something new, like virus scanner or something
else that's running in the background. If you are 100% sure that you
haven't installed anything (including a program updating itself or new
drivers) or aren't running anything extra in the background (check for
spyware) then you may need to do something as simple as defrag your drive.

Thanks everyone for the tips.

The computer has just been formatted & completely reloaded with Win98SE.
This PC will also be used for my old DOS games, so the ISA SBAWE64 is
staying inside as I want the best MIDI for my games.
The Voodoo2 cards themselves have not actually been setup yet. They are
still listed as 'Unknown' at the moment, as before they were loaded with
3rd party drivers which were causing weird graphic effects in Windows.
At the moment, after the reload, everything graphic-wise is perfect.
There is no shearing or foul ups with the graphics with MAME or anytihng
else, just the sound simply started stuttering every few seconds
constantly now.

From the old days of using MAME, I seem to remember that if you ever
copied the directory around betwen computers or drives etc, you had to
delete all the configs or certain files & run MAME up again clean so it
could create the files again ???
Anyone have any more ideas ? Upgrading the computer isn't an option as
the specs are set in stone!! SOrry!

Thanks again,
Brad.

Might a bootable Linux distro help with determining what the current
hardware setup is? I haven't tried it before, but.....

I happen to have a cd that came with an old Voodoo3 card. CD says
version 1.4, has '98 drivers and DirectX 6 on it. I'm sure there are
more recent drivers out there but I would be happy to mail you the
disk or email (or upload to ftp - space anyone?) any of the files to
you.

Post here if you are interested - my posting address is fake 😉

Hey, I've done that before when I've had a machine come through with
unmarked hardware.

That's the key phrase: 'your own computer'. As in 'the computer you
hand-picked every component for, and have both the manual(s) & driver
CD(s) in the original box stored carefully away in a closet'. As
opposed to 'the no-name computer you put together from parts your
brother picked up for you at a garage sale with the unlabelled MB &
cards which Windows can't identify'. I won't even get /started/ on
IRQ/DMI/IO/etc. conflicts!!! <PANT><PANT> Sorry for the rant, but I've
been a computer consultant since the days of the original 64K IBM PC,
and I've lived through the nightmare of trying to get 'thrift-store
hardware' to work more times than I care to think about.

Hey all,

More info on the matter. I tried reverting to the onboard soundchip on
the motherboard but it still did the same thing. Now, I have run up all
sorts of various emulators (VICE, CCS64, GENS, ZSNES, Visual Boy
Advance), plus have played some of my PC games, such as, DOOM, European
Air War, using at different times BOTH the Soundblaster AWE64 & the
onboard sound chip & the ONLY program that stutters is MAME. Everything
else works FINE !!!

AAARRGGHHH I have no idea. I know someone here will say upgrade to the
latest MAME, but my romset is already that old that version 0.67 has so
many games that will no longer run......

It's a real bitch eh

Thanks everyone,
Brad.

The best advice I can give you is:
10 MAME.version = .97
20 DOWNLOAD(MAME.version)
30 DOWNLOAD(Stuttering.ROM(MAME.version)
40 TEST(Stuttering.ROM(MAME.version)
50 IF TEST = FAILED THEN MAME.version = MAME.version - 0.01 : GOTO 20

'Nuff said?
