I'm a computer novice. My computer starts so many programs on startup that it
takes forever to boot up and is slow when i'n using it. How do I select the
programs that I want to start on boot up? There are so many that I don't want
running until I need them.

Pierre, look in your folder "Startup" under Programs in the Star Menu.
SOme are listed there. Others have options that you can access by
right-clicking the icon in the task tray.
