Hi all,

I've recently assembled a computer, and running repeatedly into blue screens. They are quite diverse and random, but occur pretty much daily. Windows starts normally, and they occur more often when the PC is idle than when it is busy (i.e., playing games). I've encountered over the course of two weeks, among others, SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION, UNEXPECTED KENREL MODE TRAP, MEMORY MANAGEMENT, APC_INDEX_MISMATCH, VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE and DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

After my last clean windows install, they stayed away for almost a week, but eventually came back. After doing a system rollback to that fresh install, the blue screens came back within a day. I barely have anything installed anyway.

My setup:
Motherboard: Asrock B450M-PRO4
GPU: Radeon RX 580
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Six-core
RAM: G.Skill Aegis F4-3000C16D-16GISB
PSU: Seasonic Focus Plus Gold 550W
SSD: SAMSUNG 860 EVO 500 GB

I'm not very technical, but I've learned / tried some things from diverse websites and suggestions. However, none of them helped, and I'm getting quite desperate (and frustrated!). Extra information:
- I'm not overclocking anything.
- RAM seems to be good (according to a couple of memtest86 runs).
- Done all the standard windows BSOD tests (chkdsk + sfc /scannow + check windows updates + memory diagnostic tool)
- I've updated some drivers before (via Radeon AMD suite, as well as all drivers with tools like DriverEasy), but it does seem to worsen things (more frequent and different BSODs) rather than improve.

I've uploaded some of the minidumps on Google drive here

I hope some one can help me. All my equipment is new, so it is extremely frustrating nothing seems to work.

Thanks!

The only driver that is likely to update that on the Asrock web site is AMD all in 1 with VGA driver ver:18.10.20_NHDA if you ran App Store I would have thought it would suggest it. Its also possible the driver in the package is the one you have now, its just dated October 18, and one on system is dated November 17

You could try a clean install as it might be that Driver Easy installed a wrong driver and reinstall might fix them all. Gives PC chance to get all new software. I normally try to fix bsod without reinstalling but sometimes its the best answer.

strange debugger still can't read bios.
Hi, from the info from the dump files, at least 3 crashes happened when internet related software was running. Chrome, Chrome, and Steam. This can sometimes mean a LAN driver is at fault.

Your LAN driver: Nov 14 2017 - rt640x64.sys - Realtek NICDRV 8169 PCIe GBE Family Controller driver
File version: 9.1.407.2015

Newer version available here: https://www.asrock.com/MB/AMD/B450M%20Pro4/index.asp#Download
Realtek Lan driver ver:10023
(That probably means version 10.0.23).

1 of the other crashes was probably caused by the video driver atikmpag.sys. The other 2 are inconclusive to me. I'm no expert at reading dumps.

All dump file info: https://pste.eu/p/49Zl.html

I would update the LAN driver as explained above.

I would remove the 3rd party driver update software (DriverEasy). Such software usually cause more trouble than what they are worth. They often get incorrect drivers, or install newer buggy drivers that don't need to be updated therefore causing more BSODs.

There is a BIOS update for your system which might help. It has to do with the video. I wouldn't install it just yet. See if you can get things working with driver fixes first.
Your BIOS: 1.6.
Latest BIOS: 2.0
This specific BIOS also has special installation instructions.

Updating your BIOS can be risky. Do not try it when you might lose power.

Why use Drivereasy when you have an Asrock motherboard? Download APP Shop ver:1.0.36 and use it to check motherboard drivers. It might also help with the above BIOS update.
https://www.asrock.com/MB/AMD/B450M%20Pro4/index.asp#Download

3rd party tools like Driver easy and Driver Booster, can and will install the wrong drivers. Always better to use 1st party update tools if they exist.

Follow Gardenman's advice :)

After the LAN update, I still got blue screens. I then updated the BIOS following the description on the Asrock website, and still got blue screens after.

I've added three of the minidumps (most recent) on Google drive here

They again were quite different (KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE, SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED, SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION), crashing on different processes.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

As for the 3 new crashes, it looks like the 1st and 3rd were possibly connecting to the net and the 2nd was the video driver.

About the 1st and 3rd crashes listed above, that could still mean the LAN driver or something about it isn't working right. I would assume that both of those applications were connecting to the internet. Usually hardware or drivers are what causes crashes, not the apps themselves.

As for the video driver, you might want to try a driver uninstall in safe mode using DDU then a driver reinstall. Full directions can be found [here].

Additional ideas or help from anyone else is welcome.

I tried another clean install of Windows, and immediately installed the most recent LAN driver and video driver. I still received another blue screen relatively soon.

My GPU seemed to be performing poorly (sometimes lagging graphics with not very intensive games). I also record gameplay (with Streamlabs OBS), which frequently skips frames (it did not do so before, and is also GPU more intensive).

I therefore decided to RMA the GPU (also given SR-71 Blackbirds comment). They tested the GPU (Timespy, Superposition, Furmark, Crysis 3), concluded it performed properly, and send it back to me. They suggested it might be a PSU problem.

Another anomaly: sometimes, my screens go black for a brief second (both screens, probably < 1-2 sec) and then immediately come back. This happened several times over the past few weeks, and usually a blue screen follows within the next hour (although they definitely do not always precede blue screens). I doubt this is a seperate monitor (or HDMI cable) issue, since they both go black for a second.

My next step is to try stress test the PSU (with OCCT, but the website is currently down). Any other suggestions or ideas are welcome.

I've added the minidumps of the most recent BSODs: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1-BoKcMbsKENYeVCSpXUXxF2lesKbYcaD

OCCT 4.5.1: https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/occt.html
I've never used it so I can't help with any results.

They are inconclusive to me but I'm no expert at reading them.

Consider eliminating a few things. Like for example, I noticed you said "screens" above. Work with only 1 for a few days. Do the same for the networking (disable devices in Device Manager and reboot). Go a day or two without networking. Do the same with any non-essential peripherals.

So you have Realtek Lan driver version 10023 installed? I was going to suggest updating as drivers date in 2017, and latest on motherboard web site is 2018.

wdfilter is part of Windows Defender so that was why I suggested LAN drivers

have you tried running in safe mode to see if it acts the same there? that would reduce chances its a driver problem
from desktop, go to settings/update & security/recovery
under Advanced Startup, click restart PC button
this reloads windows in Windows Recovery environment
choose troubleshoot
choose advanced
choose start up options
click the restart button
choose a safe mode (it doesn't matter which) by using number associated with it.
PC will restart and load safe mode

Yes, I have the most recent LAN driver from the website. Even though the date on the website says May 2018, it seems to be a driver of 2017. It is the right version, see https://imgur.com/a/05uPJAI

I will try to see if the problem is also there in safe mode.

Stress testing using OCCT did not cause BSODs. It seemed to be doing fine in the 1 hour stress test for the PSU and the CPU (separately). Suprisingly, it crashed a little while later when the PC was doing nothing and I was afk (Memory management, ntoskrnl).

Lets see if we can force it to tell us what cause is

Before running this,
1) search for “Create a restore point” and create a restore point
2) Create a bootable USB of Win 10 installer to use as a boot drive. download the Windows 10 media creation tool and use it to make a win 10 installer on USB - unless you have one already

Try running driver verifer, just read the instructions carefully. It is part of win 10 designed to find misbehaving drivers. It will cause BSOD, that is its job since it tests drivers.
Once it bsod, upload the minidump file and we see what it shows us.

Steps 1 & 2 are just precautions as sometimes driver verifer can put you in a boot loop. If this happen, follow these steps to get out of it
change boot order so USB is first, hdd second
boot from installer
on screen after languages, choose repair this pc, not install.
choose troubleshoot
choose advanced
choose system restore and roll system back to restore point created in step 1. PC should boot normally.

Solution
Same thing is happening to me, with very similar specs.

My setup:

Motherboard: Asrock B450M-PRO4
GPU: Radeon RX 570
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X 8-core
RAM: G.Skill Aegis F4-3000C16D-16GISB
PSU: Corsair CX550M
SSD: SAMSUNG 970 EVO 500 GB

What stands out to me is that we have the EXACT same motherboard, RAM, and CPU core (Pinnacle Ridge).

Did you ever solve this issue? I'm going to try a different brand of RAM just for kicks.

I see, thanks. I was just excited because the symptoms described here by OP are 100% identical to mine. And the thread said [Solved] but then I never found what worked for OP.

This seems like a denvercoder9 situation for me! https://xkcd.com/979/

I'll try collecting some minidumps and then opening a new thread.
