The only change that really affected me was that it screwed up my fonts. No amount of fiddling with font config and cleartype got it working as before, and when I use my second monitor it gets even worse. Thanks a lot.

You have to keep running windows updates until it shows up, run it from the control panel on the desktop. If you don't have enough updates, 8.1 won't appear on the Store.

I had a upgrade copy of win 8 that I used to upgrade to win 8.1. Went well the 1st time as I did it at 7am release. Had to reinstall due to incompatibilty issues with some of my apps. Anyhow, I think like the article said, you have to download all of the windows 8 updates since they aren't given specific descriptions on what does what. Meaning I know one of them is a update rollup to allow the MS store to show the win 8.1 update download button. Anyhow, because I upgrade a lot and was using a OEM version (meaing I use the reactivate by phone option over repurchasing oem copies), I purchased a full version retail copy of win 8.1. Compared to win 7 home premium full retail at over $200, I don't think $120 is all that bad if you get yourself a win 8/8.1 start menu program. With a start ment installed, I don't even have to look at anything metro.

BTW. even though the min specs are a 1 ghz cpu. I think 2 gb of ram, a dvd drive and about 20-40gb of hdd space, you do need a cpu with the proper instruction set for win 8.1. Why do I say this. I had a user who upgraded from xp to 7 32 bit on a socket 478 pentium 4 machine with 1gb of ddr1 ram and a via chipset. Worked like a charm. When I tried installing win 8.1 on a diiferent users socket 478 celeron machine with a intel chipset 3gb of ddr 1 ram, I kept getting erroi 0x0000000A before even getting to the install portion. Found out that if you don't have the proper cpu instruction set through googling the error, you can't install windows 8.1. So, if you have a machine that you bought when xp came out in 2001 or around that time, the best you can do is windows 7. hence the reason why I bought the retail win 8.1 from my friend who is the celeron socket 478 user. I am trying to get him a legit copy of win 7 hp so he doesn't get left behind by the death of xp.

I liked Window's 8 alright but installed a start menu replacemet. With 8.1 I removed it. I like the metro Start Screen I just wish they had more and more optimized desktop apps. For example it's nice that Tiny Tower and Jet Pack Joyride is available but they don't look so good on a 27 inch monitor.

Ofcourse it has more driver issues than win8 has. The manufactures have had less time to develop drivers to win8.1 than win8...
The same thing with this as forever... Wait until service pack one untill going to new windows version... Unless they keep their driver system same (like they remain when it is just a servicepack...)
In this case there are enoguh changes to allow new windows name aka 8.1 and allso new problems because we need new drivers.

I don't understand why people are having problems with the download from Windows store, I have done several upgrades without a problem. I will admit that on a few the download took took much longer than expected but it still completed without any problems.

I messed up real bad; I installed Windows 8.1 Pro Preview; and when I installed my unused Windows 8 Pro Discs/Code it caused me to have to spend a few hundred hours re-installing everything I had put on the computer for months; brecause I couldn`t `Update` using a genuine Windows 8 Pro key.
Very upset about it.
Still have many files all over the palce trying ot get my computer back in a fit state to use and find everything.

Dammed Microsoft.

I managed to get the update 4 days after it was out .. so guess i'm lucky .. though in all honestly I don't see much difference really , the re-addition of the start menu hasn't really been noticeable for me , after I got used to doing things the win 8 way I haven't had much need to use it. seem many people in general slag windows * unfairly with out ever trying it just because they hate metro. well I never use metro either I got the OS set to boot to desktop its simple and I never have to see metro. as for general functions windows 8 uses less ram than win 7 did actually and from what I've seen some games run slightly faster in windows 8. I really don't see what every one (home users) were so upset about. the only draw back I can see is that with out the start menu you do have to do some "setting up" to make the OS more business and productivity oriented .. (bassicaly you have to sticky your main business softwares to the tool bar) but even that step is not the big hassle detractors make it out to be. I say use and test it thoroughly before you judge it I've had windows 8 now for about 6-7 months (and win 8.1 for less than a month). its really not that bad.

P.S.

I've had none of the reported problems running windows 8.1 , all drivers have worked great , hell i didn't even loose any of my games/files or documents from the upgrade install. I think maybe a lot of people that go the update must have had the files corrupted by the MS servers or connection drops to the hosting server (on MS's end). because I did the update and every thing has worked perfectly . most seamless OS transition I've ever seen.

i am using windows 8 single language.i had downoaded 8.1 single language from windows store.after all the steps rebooting, sign in,code varification and sky drive next option….,my screen suddenly becomes black just after sky drive option ,with only cursor is visible for a log time..and when i refresh my system once again win. 8 appears..i hv repeated all these process 3 times, but all times same result=black screen.
what should i do???
plz give a proper solution.

Don't know other people's problem. But I upgrade win8 Pro and Win RT without a problem. But I admit that I do keep the updates up-to-date on all my computers. That's something that a lot of people failed to do or not willing to do. At least that's the fact I observed among all my friends.

I have my 5 computers set to auto-update and even after Windows 8.1 pro is updated on them all, I still find dozens of updats appearing.
Admitteldy a multiple-dozens of them are for MS Office 2007, but windows 8.1 still has tons of magabytes of updates and they come thick and fast almost every other day.

This top brand 3D laptop I am typing on still gives the BSOD every week before and after the updates; and its back from the makers three times; once with a new Mo-bo, twice with a replacement drive.

Well even if what you say is true, and it's the lack of an instruction set extension (which one?), not all CPUs from that era would be affected. Anyway, Socket 478 is almost as bad as 423. On top of that, a 2001 era Northwood derived Celeron? You'd be doing him a favor by throwing that machine away.

Even a cheap new machine with Win8 preinstalled would be worlds better than that thing.

From my experience (2 decades on and off with computers) I have had less problems this last month with my 7-yearz olde AMD 64 3200+ XP computer, than I have with a new build i7 4770 running Windows 8.1 Pro via an SSD using a GTX 780 to display.
Because of the problems with using a Windows 8 PRo code on the PReview install.
Hundreds of hours of problems that has caused for me.

I would have been a very upset bunny if it were not for my XP rig.

Reliable olde workhorse that XP is. ....But its no good for Batman GOTY which just arrived.

Off to try install... now I put over a hundred hours back into re-installing half of my stuff (some stuff I will never be able to fully remember what was where or went where and what password that was).

I had an absolutely awful upgrade experience to Windows 8.1. I was using Window 8.1 beta prior. I lost all my apps and even some documents. If interested I blogged about it here:http://blog.vimware.com/2013/11/windows-81-upgrade-long-difficult-with.html
