Discussion Massive uptick in spam threads recently?

I have push notifications enabled, so I see every spam thread before it gets deleted. I was just wondering if there was anything that could be done to prevent these threads from being created in the first place.

only blocking new users with some sort of vetting routine.

they haven't really been on the uptick much though recently compared to say, last year.
as a forum site may become more popular, more spam always becomes a factor.
in the ~8 years my account has been active there has pretty much been a consistent barrage of them, i'd say on a rather regular increase over those years.

We're currently in the middle of an unusually intense SPAM attack from several known SPAM portals. As they can unleash literally hundreds of posts per hour it's very difficult to stay up with them. However, we mods do have quite a few tools at our disposal and it looks like we've made it through the worst of the assault (famous last words ) relatively unscathed.
