I am looking to purchase an amd 64 3200+ with an abit kv8 pro motherboard and some new ram. However when i was reading the specs from amd's site it states that the 64 bit processors are only compatible with up to pc2700 ram. Does this mean that getting anything above pc2700 would be a waste? Or am i completely off the mark here?
Any and all help is appreciated, thanks

My friend has a Athlon 64 3200+ and 1 GB of Corsair DDR400. Most manufacturers bundle a 64 machine with DDR400 memory. By buying faster memory, you can overclock the processor higher. Also, you MAY see a slight advantage with DDR400 compared to DDR333. I would personally go with the DDR400.

Actually, all AMD 64 processors are rated to run on a 400 mhz fsb. If you use pc2700 memory, you'll have to either oc your memory or underclock your fsb (or run them out of sync). Your best bet is to get pc3200, run everything at 400mhz fsb, and everything is happy.

Naw! The A64 boards dont have an fsb. The have an 800mhz HT bus and a memory bus. Just the same, the memory bus can run at 200 mhz, giving 400,000,000 memory inputs per second.

So IF i buy 1GB of Kingston's HyperX DDR500 (PC4000) (CL3) and use it on a A64 3200+, i am wasting my money when i could have gotten a Corsair ValueRam DDR400 1GB? (CL2.5, 2x512)???

No, you are wasting your money on ram that is not universal. PC4000 HyperX will not run low latencies at a lower speed like Ballistix, OCZ, Corsair, Mushkin, etc. Get some better stuff!

Abit IS7 - 2.8C @ 3.4 - Mushkin PC4000 (2 X 512) - Sapphire 9800Pro - TT 420 watt Pure Power
Samsung 120gb ATA-100 - Maxtor 40gb ATA - 100
Sony DRU-510A - THAT'S MORE LIKE IT!

Well ok anyway i got the Corsairs, are these good purchases then? compared to 2 sticks of 256 (=512) mbs of OCZ or mushkin or some other low latency DDR400 stuff? (lesser buy faster = slower but more? is it true? no? yes?)

Corsair is used by many and lauded by most! Good choice!

I used one mushkin 512 stick for mine, and it works wonderfully. I ran Prime95 stress test for a day and a half with NO errors. I almost went with Corsair, but the mushkin sticks saved me a couple bucks, and they had a decent CAS, at 2.5 I think.
