Question Max memory of motherboard

Take a motherboard that has 4 DIMMs and supports up to 32gb ram. Does that mean you would have to use all 4 DIMMs at 8gb each, or would it also accept 2x16gb modules?

I need a motherboard that will support 16gb sticks of ECC ddr3 that won't cost an arm and a leg.

Oh you may be right. There was one extra motherboard standoff that I didn't see.

Ugh, now I have to move everything again.

There must be a short somewhere. I don't understand the "conductive" statement made above. If metallic (brass is common), then those stand-offs are conductive.
