I took a quick look through the memory QVLs for that motherboard and saw no instances of 16gb compatible memory specified. I think you'll have to look at other options. For example this one supports ECC ram up to 32gb, but it has 4 DIMMs, so i don't know if it will work with my 2x 16gb modules.
The ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3 supports the latest AM3+ CPU. EPU, Turbo Key and Core Unlocker features enhance overclocking performance and power optimization.www.asus.com
Look for something like a Dell Poweredge T410. Where do you live (city/state)?You are correct. It says 1, 2, 4, or 8gb sticks. Thanks for finding that. Now I know.
I'm in the middle of nowhere, so not many craigslist options. Anyway I've already got the ram, and I'd like a system to have a lot as it will processing some ram intensive tasks.
Excellent suggestion. Verify compatibility and availability of each before purchasing. Registered memory is the main issue, more so that the ECC aspect.https://pcpartpicker.com/products/motherboard/#L=3&A=1&sort=-rammax&page=1
On this list, any mobo that supports 4-64, 8-128 or higher will support 16Gb ECC sticks.
Then go hunting for used on ebay etc.
You are most welcome. Let us know how this works out.$175 isnt that bad. It has the 12 sata ports at least, so I wouldn't have to buy the SAS controller like I was planning to. I think I'll just buy this one and pick up a refurbished Xeon. They're super cheap on newegg.
Thanks for your help.
