Max plugin?

Is there a Max plugin for any version later than 4 floating around anywhere?
I've got Max 6 and 7, but I uninstalled 4 long ago. Google search turned up
nothing more recent. I suppose I could reinstall, but I'm just so used to
the newer versions...

Try out NVidia's plugins at
http://developer.nvidia.com/object/nv_texture_tools.html
They only offer a compiled version for 3DSmax 5, but also claim
to have implemented the source code for the "latest version".
Maybe you can compile it yourself.

Hmm. I seem to recall that pretty much ALL Max 4 plugins worked in Max 5,
but since I skipped 5 and went straight to 6, I can't test that theory. As
for compiling it, just what would I need to do that? I have an (old-ish)
copy of Visual Studio floating around here somewhere (would have to borrow
from work), but I've never really used it. Making MW Mods is one thing, but
compiling Max plugins seems like a bit more of a challenge. I'd be very
surprised if nobody had done this already...

I can only guess at this point since I don't have a copy of 3DSmax and
haven't worked with it, either. Judging by a few articles I've read,
there should be an SDK for 3DSmax which needs VC to compile (VC6 should
work). Use Google to find a tutorial on how to do it. Maybe there is a
howto-file included in the download.

Or if you are lucky, the plugins for v4 will work with v6. Just try it.
