NVIDIA specs https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce/graphics-cards/geforce-gtx-780/specifications/

Running a
i7 4770k
32gb 2400 vengeance
Asus ROG Maximus VI Extreme motherboard
2x GTX 780
Dell UP2414Q monitor
viper 8k mouse

I get bad mouse lag with this monitor and cant resolve it

Whats the best monitor I could get for my current hardware?

Is asking for 4k @ 144hz too much?

also willing to overclock the cards, or maybe upgrade, if it makes any difference

according to some other posts, 144hz maybe possible via DVI ports but not DP/hdmi

As I am sure you have already seen from Nvidia's site for the specs:

"3840x2160 at 30Hz or 4096x2160 at 24Hz supported over HDMI. 4096x2160 (including 3840x2160) at 60Hz supported over Displayport. Support for 4k tiled MST displays requires 326.19 driver or later"

The aspect I don't know is whether SLI actually increases the framerate or not.

Edit- I found some old information searching for "SLI GTX 780". Something to understand when finding older reviews such as what will be linked below is that running 4K on a PC wasn't really a thing then. This is ~2013?

Dual-link DVI-I Max Resolution:
2560 x 1600 @60 Hz

HDMI (version 1.4a) Max Resolution:
3840x2160 @30 Hz
4096x2160 @24 Hz

DP (version 1.2)
Max Resolution: 4096x2160 @60 Hz

So no.
4k@144Hz is not possible with your card.

If I was to buy a single 1080 GTX card, should I aim for higher than 144hz?

I need atleast 120hz, so I have to make some changes.

GTX 1080, and also i am not interested in gaming, I need 4k and refresh rate for general useage.

To reword my whole question.

Whats the fastest hz rate @ 4k I can get with a 4770k and a new GPU for non-gaming purposes.

I think the 780s are not going to cut above 60hz

The obvious answer to this would logically appear to be the best graphics card you can (afford to) install in the system and will fit. Understanding, of course, that at some point you will hit a limit for what the CPU can push to the GPU to process, offset for the higher resolution being a labor of the graphics card....

Assuming that the 144 you mention is the upper limit you are tying to achieve it may be worthwhile to consider looking for benchmark figures on modern cards using that CPU, if enough of said even exists to make a determination. I would think that searching 4790K may return more results and adjust expectations a bit on that slender difference.

Unmentioned in this thread is what you have for a power supply. If it is running two 780 now, it may be fine for a great deal of newer cards, based on its own age and output.

Edit- also keep in mind that there are modern CPU that are a more direct comparison to the i7 you have and use that as a surrogate for more availability of content.

GTX 1080 supports max 120 Hz at 4K, since it doesn't support DSC for higher framerates.
Any overclocking capability for 144hz or 160hz etc?

This appears to be the cheaper option to go.

Also considering a RTX 3060ti for 4k @ 240hz, but noticed there are not that many monitors <30" that even support 4k @ 240hz
