Max temp without damaging 8800GT

the title says it all. what is the maximum temp that gpu can take without damaging the gfx card itself?

ehem, just wanna know how margin i left after using rivatuner fan profile.

used to go up to 90C while playing crysis. now it is at 75C. anywho what is the max temp can the card handle?

I'm looking long and hard for a simple utility to adjust the GPU fan in the 8800GT and works with Vista 64 (without signed drivers problems).

I do. Keeping it consistantly below 85 degrees under load would be ideal.

With the a new version card and rivatuner set up... my card hardly goes over 75c during load. Only time your 8800GT would ever hit 90c is if you left the fan at default and you have absolutely zero airflow in your case.

Are you able to get rivaturner to work with Vista 64? (the fan auto-adjusts when using XP)
It fails to start automatically becasue of signed drivers problems.
Or I won't mind if I got the FAN to get stuck at 60%, then the card is always cool enough.

riva tuner works with vista 64 just do the percentage load thingy and it will kick in... forgot what option that is....

Its in the rivatuner setup. If you open your hardware monitor and right click of your GPU temp graph and go to (i think its) properties, you can set up profiles in that window. I have a link to a online guide for rivatuner... give me a minute to get the link for you.

Thanks for the info. I got this to work with XP before , no trouble. Maybe there is a newer version that I don't have?
I hope it's that easy. I'll try as soon as I get home.

GPUs can get upwards of 120c without being damaged.

I've seen them die as low as 95 degrees. I personally don't find anything over 90 acceptable for long-term use.

cleeve, i have used this tutorial http://www.guru3d.com/article/article/449 i hope it works...tho i know that ur issue is with vista 64. MAYBE u have to force it? using power user ? not sure. but check out the tutorial if u didnt c it before.

In Vista 64, I installed Riva in safe mode (to install without signed drivers).
Now I can run all games without overheating and seems to run well. 😀
Actually everything run better and more smoothly. I don't know why.

Pls tell us what version of the 8800GT you have, if its eVGA they put the same cooler on all their GT versions and are rated for 100C, and RivaTuner would be good for fan speed management + eVGA came out with a BIOS update for their GTs for it to be better at auto fan speed management based on heat level. I used RivaTuner to up my fan speed, but since the BIOS update, it runs well within limits so I no longer needed RivaTuner. Hope that helps 😀

I would go here http://www.xfxforce.com/web/support/showSearchDriversSerial.jspa and see if there is any "specific" driver or BIOS updates for your card. Seems there are for most manufacturers. You must enter your cards serial number though.

So when will Vista64 get signed drivers? Or that will never happen?
Did Nvidia or Ati ever run their card in a Vista 64 machine? (not sure if this is sarcastic)

But yes, all the Riva features should be in all Vista Graphics Drivers.
Or RivaTuner should come with all high-end cards.

My radeon x1600xt is supposed to work idle @50 and Load @70 but now I'm seeing high temps since the fan is shaking like a wet chicken. Now it gets to 110-120 degrees when playing anything 3d like hellgate so yes a card can be tough even at 120degrees but I don't think it's fire-wise. Is it ?? 🙂 don't have money for a x1950pro for the next weeks so tell me good luck guys.... until then I am gonna abuse it with hellgate for the time being.

I have a BFG 8800gt OC2 (675/1674/1950) and the support team told me the following:

"This card tends to run hot. The temperatures you are experiencing are nornmal for his card. The card can idle at about 75-85 Celsius. The max temperature for this card can reach 100-110 Celsius."

Mine runs 65 idle and not more than 80 on load. But I'm only playing HellgateLondon, which is not a demanding game.

And yes, obviously, they didnt read my original email, they just sent me an answer template!

I have a suggestion for you .... Zalman vf-900cu. I got a 8800gt and installed the cooler as soon as I got the card. I did not want the card to become a heat generator in my case. With the vf-900 the card idles between 42, 44 and while gaming (like crysis for a couple of hours) it never goes over 57. Great cooler ! If you get it you should also get extra heat sinks because the zalman only comes with heat sinks for the memory but not for the capacitators that are covered with the stock cooler. I got some Thermaltake copper memory heat sinks and it works great and they're cheap.

im using my Zotac 8800gt amp factory clocked at 700mhz GPU and 2000mhz memory for over a year now. Idle temps at 70% manualy controled fan speed are around 40°C on GPUcore but could get as high as 105°C(even at 100% fan speed) when playing at full quality settings(4x,8xAA) for longer period and the card still works as new. So i think the high 90s°C are still safe
