MB, CPU, RAM... Intel or AMD?

So long story short, PC (namely motherboard) bit the bullet and I'm having a hell of a time finding a replacement LGA 1155 board for obvious reasons. I've decided upgrades are a faster way to move forward but the downside is I need RAM and a CPU on top of the motherboard.

I'm trying to stay low on the budget but at the same time want some future proofing. I was looking at both the 8700k and the Ryzen 7 series, but currently just wanted to get some feedback especially considering the price of those choices. I'd even consider others if that would be a more reasonable course of action. The GPU I'm using is Sapphire Nitro R9 390, if that adds anything to the equation. Please let me know, I would greatly appreciate your opinions.

"low budget" and "8700k" doesn't sound good together lol....

if you truly are on budget, I'd suggest you...
Intel is definitely more future proof.

But one important thing to consider is the resolution at which you game. Anything above 1080P will remove the CPU bottleneck. Which means there won't be any difference between Ryzen or Coffee Lake.

At 1080P Intel will have the upper hand, giving you slightly more frames. This is important if you have a 144Hz display.

if you truly are on budget, I'd suggest you could go on local classifieds/ebay and buy a used pair for CPU+MOTHERBOARD (they try sell together when parting out systems). You could find a budget replacement.

otherwise, if you want something that's best bang for the buck and will be good in some years still, I'd suggest go with i7-8700 non k, it's budget friendly and you dont need to worry about OC that the i5 would be used for usually, while still giving great performance

I this just for gaming? If yes are you gaming at 60Hz or 144Hz plus?

Gaming mostly, and while I want to get a higher refresh rate I'm currently running at 60Hz on a 43 inch TV. It's an older TV I want to move out to the living room, but that's for a later date. It's not out of the question that I won't find a decent 144Hz monitor in the future so I won't mind either take.

Oh I agree, damn thing is expensive not including the rest of the parts needed. It's the reason I figured I'd put the question out there before I commit. Though I'm also sitting on 5+ year old tech (Asus P8Z77-V with i5-3470). I'm just also thinking about not spending money on something that's not going to be obsolete soon (so I'm not stuck in a similar boat as I am now). I hadn't thought to checking the classifieds, I'll give it a look but still prefer something those people are probably upgrading to.
