I will soon attempt my first ever Motherboard upgrade (I am making the jump from an AMD XP2400+ to an Athlon 64 3400+.

Will I need to reinstall my operating system afterward?

A lot of people use sysprep after uninstalling all of their drivers/running a driver cleaner. It basically strips the device information off every device and Windows detects everything as being brand new after restarting. IMO, it's much cleaner and faster than a repair install, and WAY faster than a fresh install. It's mainly used to make generic ghost images, but it works very well for swapping major components such as the motherboard.

Some people are die-hard about fresh installs though. It won't make any/much of a difference unless you let your previous installation get bogged down.

If you are staying with the same chipset maker, it should be no problem. I have upgraded nforce and via systems without even batting an eye.
If you are changing chipset makers, uninstalling all related drivers, including ide, may get the job done.
Having said that, you will not get the same performance you would from a clean OS install. Sometimes it pays to have a clean slate.

Gunner,
Thanks for the info/link - will definitely be implementing this for my home system!

End - Based on what I read, it looks like 'Resealing' Win XP acts almost exactly like doing a fresh install and saves time. I wonder if it works for the Home edition? If not, then I'll be doing it old school. :frown:
