Hello, guys, I'm planning to build a new AM4 system. I have my old 7200 HDD which is installed atm in my PC (and has 2 partitions and Win10 installed on it ) in MBR
The question is will it work on my new AM4 system that will require GPT win10 install on new nvme m2 drive. I mean would I be able to plug it in and make it work with no formatting and removing everything it has?

Solution
So the answer is MBR HDD would not work in a new system with GBT nvme win10 or any other reason why I would need to copy files to another drive?
Dont want to be annoying, just dont have any other drive atm to copy files.
It will work as a secondary drive.
Its just that the folder structure and location of your "files" will be an issue.
Anything in the Libraries are tied to that old user. Permissions will intrude. It will be a pain to gain access.

It is just that it is much easier to move that data out from the Libraries while the old system is still running.
"use some files"

A MUCH better solution would be to copy those files off to some other device first.
Wipe that drive completely.
Then, connect it and use it as desired.

USAERet has this one exactly right. Copy the files to some other partition / HDD / thumb drive. If your old system is a prebuilt (Dell/HP/etc) then you likely have a recovery partition on that MBR HDD. You could remove and recreate a different partition in that space and then copy your files there. But copying to an external HDD would be easier than that.

Your new build will likely be UEFI boot to NVMe. That requires the boot drive to be GPT. Additional HDDs could possibly be MBR.

You really need to have extra USB attachable or network storage (or just an extra HDD in the case). Else, how do you do backups?
