I have to disagree though. I think they made the right choice. This is a pretty niche game. I'm not sure the popularity of the series would be enough to drive sales and allow continued maintenance at a low cost. This might be the only way to bring the game off the drawing boards. You know the suits always have the final say. =/

Sounds like they are trying to make it more realistic.

That's basically my response. Those with money will destroy the ones that play for free. it's PvP only game, there is no co-op.

"The classic PC franchise MechAssault is finally making a long-awaited return, but it won't arrive as the next installment to the original series. Instead, developer Piranha Games is using Crytek's CryENGINE 3 to create the "premium" free-to-play MechWarrior Online."

Any questions?

The CryEngine? Really? UE3 wasn't an option? And "free to play online" business model? No single player option?

Way to set it up to be the suckiest suck in the history of sucking.

(I'm waiting for HAWKEN)

did this say its a pay to win?
most of the successful f2p games are cosmetic changes at best with paying. with mech warrior, cant you imagine that they would charge 10 or so $ and you could get a custom skin or something?

i should also say, the worst of the f2p moddles that i have come across were all asian based, this is all in the western world, developed and funded.

Thats what im hoping for not the Crossfire method or NFS:W that grants u clear advantage over players who dont buy stuff.

"Free to play" games are a bad deal. The "free to play" system Milks the gamer who is willing to spend small amounts of money periodically. Even if it ultimately means spending a large sum in the end. It baffles me that enough people have got into "free to play" games to warrant the industry shift.

I rather pay the 50 or 60 bucks than have a F2P model. If you want small incremental payments make it 2 bucks a month and pennies for items that are not going to change the balance of the game itself

F2P is one of the worst things to come along. It is essentially "price hiding". Developers are today's "used car" salesmen. On the Android and iFone market, almost every game that comes out is now F2P and nothing but a nickel and dime fest for buffed DLC.

I consider it deceptive and I wish it were illegal.

It is also about control. When I purchase a game, I am done with the dev at that point and now I am in control of my gaming experience. With FTP, you are forever in bed with the dev whether you want to be or not.

[citation][nom]unksol[/nom]sweet they are ripping off mechwarrior living legends www.mechlivinglegends.net/[/citation]
I don't see how they are ripping it off, considering that Living Legends is more of a very extensive fan based mod and both coming from the same setting.

As for free to play, its seemed to have worked well for both DDO and LOTRO (DC online is doing it now too, not sure how its going for them though) and they are all games that were released as big "standard" MMOs and found that simply didn't work for them. Even TF2 has gone F2P. The idea is that its better to get a few dollars from a lot of people then a lot from just a few.

And at this point I sort of agree with the decision because I've found myself not finding many games, MMOs especially, worth the upfront cost when you never know what you're going to get. There are a few MMOs that I would have keep playing but I simply didn't have the time to justify the monthly cost and if I could only play a few hours a week, at least I could play a few hours a week.

I think they realize that they simply don't have the marketing or mindshare required to get millions of people to try the game when those gamers have to spend that much up front (especially with the way the economy has been and the number of other games competing for that big chunk of money). I think its a reasonable way for them to prove to gamers what they can do with the game in a way that can't be done in a traditional sales way.
