I don't see how they are ripping it off, considering that Living Legends is more of a very extensive fan based mod and both coming from the same setting.
As for free to play, its seemed to have worked well for both DDO and LOTRO (DC online is doing it now too, not sure how its going for them though) and they are all games that were released as big "standard" MMOs and found that simply didn't work for them. Even TF2 has gone F2P. The idea is that its better to get a few dollars from a lot of people then a lot from just a few.
And at this point I sort of agree with the decision because I've found myself not finding many games, MMOs especially, worth the upfront cost when you never know what you're going to get. There are a few MMOs that I would have keep playing but I simply didn't have the time to justify the monthly cost and if I could only play a few hours a week, at least I could play a few hours a week.
I think they realize that they simply don't have the marketing or mindshare required to get millions of people to try the game when those gamers have to spend that much up front (especially with the way the economy has been and the number of other games competing for that big chunk of money). I think its a reasonable way for them to prove to gamers what they can do with the game in a way that can't be done in a traditional sales way.
