I am currently using a merc from act I, but came upon
an item (WOLFHOWL) for a barb. I currently have no
barb characters at level 79 (min lvl to wear wolfhowl).
If I buy a new merc from act5 which states that I can
equip them with barb class items, would my merc be able
to really make use of all its attributes? Has anyone
done this kind of thing? Should I just sell it and
move on? Trade it?

You can probably equip the merc with Wolfhowl (Act 5 mercs can wear
barbarian helmet types) but he will not be using any of it's skills on
there. Something like Arreat's Face is very useful for an Act 5 merc,
Wolfhowl probably less so.

I'm also still wondering of mercs make use of 'passive' modifiers on
items, for instance the 'Critical Strike' passive skill on the Insight
runeword. Will that affect an Act 2 merc wielding an Insight polearm?
