Media Works is not what I expected

I changed to the Media Works package after running up some impressive phone
bills with an Internet Express plan. After changing I was unable to log onto
the internet using my V400 as a Modem. After 4 calls to Cingular I was told
that the Media packages only worked with the phone internet and if I wanted
to use my PC I would have to sign up for one of the data connect plans.

I have to say that I am not impressed with the way these services are being
marketed and supported. All I want to do is to access the internet, from my
PC via my mobile phone when I do not have access to a network (wireless or
wired).Surely there is a plan that will let me do this at a reasonable
price.

Not true at all!!! The problem is many of the people at Cingular's
support don't know brick from a cell phone! You can use the media works
package from from a laptop. I just think you are using the wrong
settings. With Media Works you MUST use the wap.cingular access
point(AP). I think the Internet Express plan uses isp.cingular and you
can't access it on Media Works. Here is the basic settings I use for
both my phone and laptop. If this dosn't work for you, let us know.

Try these settings:

For Laptop/PDA connection:
In the phone set the Access Point(AP): wap.cingular
In the Laptop/PDA set your Dialer to dial *99# on the serial port your
phone is connected to
In the Laptop/PDA set your Dialer to use the usnername:
WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM (use CAPS)
In the Laptop/PDA set your Dialer to use the password: CINGULAR1 (use CAPS)

For the WAP browser in the phone:
Homepage: http://device.home
Proxies: Enabled
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com:80
Data Bearer: GPRS
Access Point(AP): wap.cingular
Authentication Type: Secure
Login type: automatic
User name: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM (use CAPS)
Password: CINGULAR1 (use CAPS)

That is true in most cases, but not mine. In my case, as soon as I switched
from PPU to Media Works, my wap.cingular APN starting giving me a "GPRS
Parameters Incorrect" message. The only way I can now connect through the
phones wap browser or my laptop is using the ISP.CINGULAR APN and settings.
CS claims everything is ok on my account, and my settings are correct in the
phone, but no wap.cingular. For the most part I don't care, but with the
ISP.CINGULAR APN you can't access some sites using the phones wap browser
due to DNS differences.

After some further research and a discussion with my local Cingular store, I
agree with your analysis. The Media Works package does not support
isp.cingular. If you use a 'Wireless Internet Express' account (This is not
the same as the one included in the Media Works package) isp.cingular is
supported. I signed up to a 5MB Wireless Internet Express account, at $14.99
per month, so I could get online.

I do have one question. You mention the dialer and the serial port. My V400
is connected the laptop via a USB cable and uses the Motorola drivers and
software, does this mean I cannot configure the system to use WAP?

The information you have provided is greatly appreciated.

David.

Why did you spend $14.99 for only 5MB when you could get unlimited for
$19.99? 5MB will go very very quickly.

Because when I originally signed up to the Media Works package I could not
get my PC to connect to the internet via my phone (No isp.cingular support,
as I discovered). After 4 calls to Cingular I was told that Media Works did
not support this and that I needed to sign up to one of the data access
plans (2 year commitment needed). After a visit to my local Cingular shop I
transferred to the Wireless Interned Express account (5MB). It will do what
I need, with the 5MB limitation ( I agree with you it ain't a lot. Try using
Lotus Notes if you want an example of how not to transfer data). I now know
that I should us WAP with Media Works to allow my PC to access the internet
via the phone (WAP rather than ISP).

So I have gone round the houses to get to where I want to be, because the
support from Cingular is terrible and the only way I can get decent
information is through to kindness of fellow newsgroup users. I now have to
transfer back to the Media Works package, hope I don't incur too many
charges from the Internet Express account and then pray I can set the whole
thing up to work with WAP. If I compare cellphones to PC operating systems,
I am not sure we have even left DOS when it comes to ease of use and setup.

Am I happy with the above; no but if I can get my PC talking to my phone via
the Motorola software and a USB cable at a cost of $19.95 per month I will
have achived my goal.
