Memory configuration for Macbook

I have a mid 2010 unibody macbook with 16GB ram. I also have the same model with just 2 gb of ram. Can I remove one 8gb ram stick from the first macbook and install the same on the other macbook? Can macbook work with only one bank populated or does it require memory in both the banks. And lastly I would like to know if there is a significant amount of performance penalty between a 2010 macbook with 8 gb and one with 16gb.

Yes, you can move the stick from one to other MacBook, they should perform well.

The performace is reduced to about 60-70% with the removal of a 8GB stick.
