Hi, I had 16x2GB Patriot memory sticks in my system however they aren't part of kit, one has 3000mhz and another one was bought later and has 3200mhz and they also have different manufacturers (one has Hynix and another one something else), but since my motherboard doesn't support those speeds, they are running with motherboard's maximum supported speed and to be honest, I don't care about their speed and my PC has been very stable even though they are 2 different sticks with zero blue screens or instability for years and I have been using this system for years with zero problems. So, week ago, I decided to upgrade my RAM, because I wanted more RAM and bought kit of 32x2GB and installed along with my current memory, so now in total I have 96GB RAM and system has been stable with no problems all this week, however yesterday, when I was playing a game and I was doing alt+tab, on one of those attempts my PC bsoded with the error "memory management". So, first idea that came to my mind was to install memtest86 and run it. So, I did it and left it for whole night. When I woke up today, well it wasn't finished, but it was near the end and as you see, still no errors:

Now my question is - when this test ends and if it ends with zero errors, what should be my next step? And what could be the culprit of that error? Is it possible that somehow that game somewhere in settings still has cached info about my old RAM capacity and that's why it crashed? Should I re-install that game? Or maybe it's Windows that has such cached info somewhere and maybe I should re-install Windows instead? Or maybe BIOS didn't do good job automatically configuring those different sticks altogether and maybe I should go to BIOS and manually configure them?

My motherboard is Gigabyte B460M DS3H and memory sticks are Patriot Viper Steel Series.

my advice is take out the 2x16 gb sticks of ram, and just run with 64gb.. @ highest speed it will allow.
sell the 2x16gb sticks on ebay or "C.E.X" or any shop that will take them and use the cash towards 2x16 sticks that match like the same as the 2x32gb so you have more compatability.

I have been using this system for years without zero problems.
You mean with zero problems. You made that seem like you were having problems. Mixing and matching sticks of ram is hit or miss. You can look through the forums and go as far back as a decade, not every stick of ram will come off the same assembly line and minor variations in temperature can also alter the latencies on an IC. Couple that info with the fact that there are multiple vendors for ram IC's.

As prior thread have stated, you work with a ram kit, doesn't matter if you're not running them at their advertised frequency, it boils down to the OC's not being of the same make and model although on face value they might look the same.

What motherboard are you working with? What BIOS version are you working with? Got a link to the new ram kit? I noticed you have info in your sig space. Please add that into the thread's body since sig space specs can and will change over time and when that happens, this thread and it's subsequent suggestions are rendered moot to the end user in the same boat as you're in now.

what should be my next step?
Ditch the prior rams and work with the ram kit you recently bought with them populating slots A2 and B2. If you have to update the BIOS on your motherboard, flash to the latest, then clear the CMOS, then see if you get any more stability issues.

  1. Right, fixed it.
  2. The motherboard I have in my signature - Gigabyte B460 and yes, it's on latest BIOS version. Motherboard's not the issue. I don't have link for them, I bought them from the local guy. It's Patriot Steel Series Viper, I think 3200MHz. Sure, will add it my initial post.
  3. Test completed with zero errors.

Today, I will reinstall that particular game and see if this bsod happens again. If it does, then I will re-install Windows. If bsod still happens after that, then my last step will be removing my old memory sticks. Will update this thread if bsod happens.

it would be more logical to take out the 2x16gb sticks and check that.. before you go though the hastle of re-installing windows. (and find it was the ram issue , and you lost all your data for no reason).

Memtest finished with no errors, so I don't see what I should be inspecting with 2 sticks on slots only. It will be definitely working without errors. I better reinstall Windows and spend more time on that, but end up with 96GB RAM, rather than just put my old sticks on shelves and end up with 64GB. I mean why? If there's a Windows or game problem, better first fix that problem and end up with more RAM, rather than just play safe and end up with less RAM because I was lazy to re-install Windows.

its your choice.. taking the 2 memory sticks out to check if they were the issue would take only 2 minutes. reinstalling windows would take 30 minutes or longer, including re adding all stuff you need again. and possible still have same issue.
the more ram you add that dont match. the more issues you would get.. when you only had 2x16gb(not same speed) sticks the issue was not so noticable. but as soon as you added more ram.. you noticed. . myself and another person has suggested. that you take out the mismatched ram. .. i understand that you want 96gb so you would be best to sell the 2 old mismatched ram sticks and but a matched pair (same speed as the 2x32gb ram).

we have given you the advice. its upto you if you take the advice or not...
