FWIW category. I have read how touchy Dell is with RAM and that only Crucial
should be consulted but with some experience for years with Dell I see a
change lately. I have had Micron, Samsung, and I believe Infineon but the
latest 4600 came with Elpida. That was a new one on me so I checked it out.
A joint venture from NEC and Hitachi...very interesting. Both known for RAM
and electronic components.

I don't think "only" Crucial should be used. It's just that Crucial seems to
be one that doesn't cause many problems.

My one 8300 came with Nanya memory and I added memory from Crucial.

dell's are not particular about compatible memory, but like with any
computer you have to know what you need for a given system... crucial makes
it easy to buy for any computer and prevents a novice from making an
incorrect choice. the premium for buying from crucial is only about 10%
over a good sale price for the correct generic memory. prices that appear
to be wildly different than crucials prices are usually because the type of
memory wildly different. crucial is often recommended to those that are
unsure of what they need to purchase, or if you just don't want the hassle
of getting the wrong type and making a second trip to the store to exchange
it (and possibly pay restocking fees). on occasion dell software and
peripherals division has a better price than crucial so it is worth looking
there too.
