Memory remapping freezes Windows 7 RC

I am having problems getting all my memory to show up.
If i run memory remapping disabled, bios reports 2.5 gig out of the 4 that is installed.
memory remapping enabled I get 4 of 4 gig reported in bios but.... Windows 7 rc x64 will not load. It gets to the starting windows screen and that's it.

Did you have it enabled when you installed Windows? If not, I'd suggest reinstalling it with the remap enabled.

Ok. tried that, it goes through "loading Windows files" then to "Starting Windows" then hangs.

What board? Do you have the option of remapping for hardware or software?
If you have both options, enable only software.
Bump the voltage slightly.

Doh... Am I missing something here, or are you expecting a 32 bit OS to see 4GB memory? Brain must be slow this AM... Guess I need another coffee.

Start > control panel > system... Should have a line that says system type: 64 bit operating system.

The memory remap function was originally included for some versions of OS2, and some earlier versions of NT 3.5X. Should not be required in present OS's, and indeed may impair functions by not allowing the OS to properly map RAM.

However, your description looks suspiciously like you have a 32 bit version of Win 7 installed.

Ok here it is, I don't believe that this is a OS problem because BIOS is reporting only 2.5 gig, Windows says 4 gig installed and 2.5 gig usable because BIOS reports that only 2.5 is usable. That's why I was turning memory remapping on. then the bios would read all 4 gigs, and that worked but windows would hang on startup.

Hmmm... Curious. Do you have access to Vista x64? If so, try that. Same problem, then BIOS / MB related, IMO. Either way, this needs to be sent to MS via the 'feedback' link. 'Start > control panel > AllControlpanelItems >Action Center then the bottom and click on troubleshooting. It is still a beta, now is the time to get these 'gotchas' out of the way.

Should do, but I cannot repeat your config as I only have XP 32 Pro. I still think that you should report this issue to MS, via the feedback link. that I gave to you prior. You might also prowl the MSDN knowledge base for other people's issues with your similar setup.

I CAN verify that this looks very like issues that I have seen with with various versions of Vista x32, (alpha through retail) as well as Win 7 beta and RC, 32 bit. I've never seen this issue as described on a 64 bit version of any of the above, nor have I seen any postings on MSDN that would indicate to me that this was an issue. But I do not have a setup similar to yours...

You have my curiosity piqued, please this thread updated.

update: I do have a copy of vista Buisness x64 tried installing with memory remapping enabled and bios reporting 4 gig memory....install locked up right after loading windows files.
memory remapping disabled it installed but BIOS and windows reports 2.5 gig

newest Bios update from asus already been done.
also did a report to MS waiting for reply....
and wrote to ASUS to see why it's being reported as 2.5 gig .... 1st response was to set memory remapping to enabled....that's what I did 1st and when windows froze on start-up ASUS said it was a MS issue.
I have another computer running Windows 7 rc x64 with 6 gig ram. 6 gig shows in BIOS and Windows System Properties ...no remapping involved.
I really believe it's a memory-mobo issue
I have rewritten to ASUS and am now waiting for a reply
I am almost ready to give up and buy another mobo.

It is required no matter what OS you are running (as long as the OS supports memory above 4G). Old or new.

ok here's some more info:

4 GB of RAM on board (single- or double-channel) and graphics card enabled
(memory remap OFF)

-POST shows 2560 MB of RAM
-memtest works fine...but, of course, not all of the RAM is detected.

4 GB + 8500GTX (memory remap ON)

-POST shows 4608 MB (which appears to be main memory + GPU memory)
-memtest freezes when it tries to test beyond 4096 MB (well, obviously: there *is* only 4GB there, but the BIOS sees extra...)

4 GB, using integrated graphics (memory remap ON)

-POST shows 4088 MB (correct amount: 4GB minus what integrated graphics uses)
-memtest works

2 GB (one DIMM) + 8500GTX (memory remap ON or OFF)

-POST shows 2048 MB (precisely the right amount)
-memtest works

So there we have it. With 4GB and a graphics card installed, the board gets confused and sees memory that isn't there (even with latest BIOS), but without the GPU or with less memory, everything's perfect.

The trouble is, of course, that I don't want to lose 2 GB of memory or the GPU, since this machine's going to be used for a lot of 3D animation.



Now I have removed my 8500 gtx oc video card and enabled remapping.
BIOS reads 4 gig of ram
everything is good
Now I will go dig out some different ...but unfortunatly smaller..... video cards and see what happens.

LIke others have suggested, consider updating the BIOS to latest version. Your Mb has onboard video. In BIOS, disable memory allocation for onboard video if onboard is not in use. System memory is used as onboard video memory. BIOS has adjustments as to how much including the option to disable memory dedicated to onboard video.

I have checked multiple times to make sure. that was one of the 1st things I did.
there is no option in BIOS to disable memory allocation for onboard video. In the BIOS the options for onboard video are grayed out when PCIe card in installed.

Sounds like the system is a prebuilt, DELL, HP, etc. The BIOS should not be grayed out. Like someone suggested, try Vista 64 if available.

this is not a prebuilt. I built this system. the BIOS grays out the option only when a PCIe video card is pluged in. If no card then I have some options for onboard video. There is no option to turn off on board video.

Vista x64 issue:
I replied right after the post you are referencing and said that I had vista buisness x64 and was having the same results.

This is clearly a motherboard issue and not a OS issue.

My system - P5B, Intel Q660, Nvidia 9500 and 1GB x2 + 2GB x 2 got same problem on Windows 7 64 bit, but not Vista 64 bit (too frustrating on it, so I go back to XP before,,,,)

lasted BIOS was upgraded, many combinations of BIOS setting were tried.... no improvement

I think we need to buy a new mobo to save display card and memory... hate ASUS

Completely answered my question about memory allocation. My mobo is the same with the exact same results. 4G skill dual ch. using 2500 0r 2.5G on a P5B VMSE board. However I heard that this board is not supported by RC 7. Just yet anyway. We may just have to wait for the updates and or use the win 7 X64 supported hardware as suggested by Mr. Gates and MS. Ever heard of PS2 having to use win 7 support ready device. Just another way for Mr. gates to force us to get devices that support his OS. Conspiracy Theory?! Who knows. I have a split drive for XP X32 and RC 7 and XP runs fine. We may get 4 more years out of XP before updates are deminished!
