Would merging two HDDs into a single partition double the read/write speed? I know it would combine the storage capacity but would it also increase read and write speed? Is it possible it would slow down read/write speed?
First off. You can not merge 2 disks. They are separate. Second off no it doesn't increase speed. Speed is determined by the hardware not by some simple software changes

You in fact can combine two HDDs and it looks like this.
Spanned volume is not recommended since it is less reliable than regular simple volume from each disk. There is no benefit and keeping a simple volume would be better
No, if anything its worse.
It adds a slight level of convenience, since you dont have to pick a drive. However, it doubles the chance of data loss with drive failure.
