One source of this type of problem is the details of the connector on the end of the headset cable. The more common headset system has a cable with TWO plugs on its end. One is colour-coded green and is for the earphones, and the other is coded pink and is for the microphone. On each of these the jack has THREE contacts: tip, one ring, and the sleeve. Almost all computer cases come with front audio jacks to accept this type, with two sockets side-by-side and colour coded for those two jacks.
