I have an ROG Strix gaming laptop. Installed is a Micron 2200 MTFDHBA512TCK 512gb nvme m.2 that started getting a S.M.A.R.T error warning 4ish months ago. So I did some research and found my laptop should be able to run a 6TB m.2. So I bought a WD Green 2tb m.2 nvme that has the same specs (minus the capacity) as the micron. Installed the new m.2 in my external and installed a clean instal of windows on it. Shut down the laptop pulled out the old m.2 and put in the new m.2. Put it back together l, turned on laptop and NOTHING. I can't even get it into BIOS. So I think I screwed something up and take out new m.2 put old m.2 in and laptop starts up. So I connect the new m.2 in my external enclosure connect it via USB restart and boot from the USB and the laptop starts up no issues. So I figured I must have just improperly installed the new m.2. Open laptop pull out old put in new double check the seat make sure it's good close up case start laptop and.... nothing. Once again can't get into bios or anything. So I turn it off pull new m.2 and reformat it thinking maybe I formated it wrong somehow that wouldn't let it be main boot drive. Put it blank in laptop and used USB drive as primary boot drive. Turned on and nothing. I have tried changing bios settings with the old m.2 in nothing. Using my new SSD I installed windows to it and set bio to run from it and tried new m.2 and it won't load. I can have no m.2 in and run from ssd, can have old m.2 in and run from ssd but as soon as the new one gets put in I get nothing.

For clarification...
ROG Strix GL731GT- RB73 mfg 09/2019
Old m.2 - Micron 2200 MTFDHBA512TCK
New m.2- WD Green SN350 NVMe SSD WDS200T3G0C - SSD - 2 TB - PCIe 3.0 x4 (NVMe)
When I say nothing- laptop powers on, loads up the logo and stays there. Can't hit f2 to get into bios and can't do anything at all except power down my laptop. I have been looking for answers for this for months now.... and today I'm about 99% positive the micron m.2 died completely (although it may be more serious then that idk yet)

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Installed the new m.2 in my external and installed a clean instal of windows on it. Shut down the laptop pulled out the old m.2 and put in the new m.2.
You should've installed the SSD without the older SSD and installed the OS with an installer that's recreated using Windows Media Creation Tools.

I would also see if your laptop is pending any BIOS updates.

So a clean M.2 with nothing on it using a WMCT USB? Tried that as well. But that wouldn't change the fact that I could take the m.2 out of the laptop put it in a external enclosure and boot from USB with no issues. (Or at least I don't see why it would) its not that the computer won't read the m.2, or that there is something wrong with the m.2, or the Win OS on the m.2. I can put it in my old laptop and it works no issues, external enclosure no issues, but as soon as I try to put it in the laptop it stops everything. Even if I have boot option for boot from USB, or boot from ssd. Both work without it I. The laptop but if I put it in none of them work at all.

As for BIOS I checked everything I could check and I'm still on the latest version. I even thought maybe there was an issue with the newest version and flashed to an older and same issues. So I don't think it's BIOS related. I'm leaning towards something that would prevent someone from changing out a m.2. Some software that runs pre-BIOS that won't let BIOS launch if there is anything but the original m.2 is in it. But, I have no idea what or how that would work

What happens if you clone the internal to the external and then remove the internal and install the external.

So that was like the 6th or 7th thing I tried. Nothing happens. I get the logo and nothing. Can't get into BIOS or anything. It is weird. I have never had this issue with anything.
