Note: Sorry if this is not in the correct category, systems seemed like the only category vague enough to ask a microphone related question.

Hello,

I just built my new computer a few days ago and it has been running excellently. With one exception: I cannot manage to record any audio with a microphone connected to the mic in or line in ports. Here are my relevant system specs:

i7 4790k, ASUS Maximus VII Gene mATX mobo, GTX 770.

I didn't buy a sound card, but I noticed that the motherboard came with a little tiny SupremeFX sound card with its own special port on the motherboard. I have it hooked up correctly because my speakers are connected to it and work perfectly. Headphones that are plugged into the headphones out audio port also work fine.

I've looked at all of the online troubleshooting guides and forums I could find and tried most of their suggestions. Nothing seems to work.

The microphone I am trying to use is built into a pair of mobile earbuds. (Like the apple iPhone earbuds). It works correctly on my phone.

At this point, I am getting frustrated and may try buying a USB headset to make skype calls etc. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions aside from the obvious "is it plugged in?"

Upon reading some other posts on the forums here, I noticed that some people are talking about mobile headset to PC adapters... Is this what I need to use my phone earbuds with a mic built in?

Thank you so much.

Solution
check your driver state, go to device manager, find your driver, right click and press update drivers
if it is up to date or that doesn't work, you can revert back to previous drivers, and that can fix it sometimes.
to do this right click and then update drivers, select from my computer, then pick from my computer, then in the table DESLECT the driver (important) then un check "compatable drivers". then trial and error install the old ones

It sounds like you are just pluggin the earbud with mic into the PC microphone input. I would not expect that to work. If you look at the plug for your earbuds, you'll see that it has three rings around it, in addition to the tip connection. The connections are usually:
tip - left channel
1st ring - right channel
2nd ring - mic
3rd ring - common or ground.

The mic/line connectors in PCs only have the tip and first ring, then the ground is longer. The jack would either miss the microphone connection altogether, or connect it to ground, either way giving no signal to the sound card input.

You can try an adapter such as: http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-MUYHSFMM-Headset-Splitter-Adapter/dp/B0058DOWH6/ref=sr_1_3
