I'm all for competition that drives improvements, but Bing (which Yahoo now also uses as its search engine) has a long way to go until it becomes a verb.
The combined worldwide search market share of Microsoft+Yahoo has gone down from around 11% to 9.5% in the last 12 months(source: http://marketshare.hitslink.com/search-engine-market-share.aspx?qprid=5).
Microsoft is really pushing hard with Bing, but I'm not sure they'll get any significant market share. We'll see ...

They may add more ads, and bigger ones, but that does not mean they have as many people seeing them.
Probably the only ones seeing those ads are those employed by microsoft, because google is blocked by their server (or something)....

I don't mind monopoly, if you look at the way Google is running it...
It's free, the searches are pretty right on, the ads are hidden, and not disturbing, and the pages are clean and small of html code.

In contrast, Bing is pretty unclean in code, they have plenty of distracting background pics and toolbars and so on...

Monopoly is only bad when there's a limiting factor, like they raise prices of a cheap product, or they limit functionality like Windows or Mac OS.

But as soon as you have a company that is professionally busy with researching on how to create something that will fall in flavor of most people, then people don't need to figure out anymore how things best are...

It's kind of comparing a Lotus car to those cheap pimped up rides...
Sure those pimped up rides may perform nearly as well as a Lotus, but a Lotus is and stays a real race car, not a modded home vehicle. It is made to last, and endure the long stretches on high speed, and the sharp cornering.

Likewise, Google is made to be as simple as can, with enough info for just about anyone. Adding any more functionality would compensate the simplicity of the site, and the downloadsize of the pages.

All of that hooplah for the buyout of Yahoo! by M$, and look what they end up doing anyway: Bing powering search for both, and Yahoo doing the same with ad support .

I'm more curious about how the search engine war will look after the NEXT 12 months
than the last 12 months.
