[citation][nom]ShouldntHave[/nom]I interpret this more as meaning "it's free to play games once you have bought the client", not "you can DL a client for free and play", in order to keep ppl from freaking out that "now that it's MMO there's going to be a monthly fee." Could be wrong; have no idea.[/citation]

Interesting. I interpreted this as "Users are free to play around with the shopping cart feature that allows them to spend money on subscriptions and vaporous 'points' to spend on in-game 'items'"

As a longtime age of empires fan, I can tell you that the competitive aoe community is not very exited about this game.
I think that their presentation of the game should be improved as well, is the Capitol an improved Home City? Or is it an RPG, with RTS missions and battles between players?
The balance is probably going to be terrible, what if you only have level 8 spartans and your opponent dominates them with his level 10 spartans, while being a worse player than you and making less of them?
The graphics are probably my least concern, I don't like them but I can live with them.
I guess I will have to just sign up for the beta and hope I get accepted:

[citation][nom]MxM[/nom]To be honest I am not sure that it is RTS. It could be more like MMORPG with RTS elements...[/citation]

RTS with MMO elements

I still dont understand why they had to close down Ensemble, only to have part of the original team reform into a new group, and then start working on this game. It doesn't make any sense to me. But anyway, rant aside, I am excited about the game, and promptly signed up for the beta. I have a lot of fond memories of the earlier Age of Empires games. I can remember quite a few weekend long LAN parties where the only game we would play was Age Of Empires II. Fun times!

On a side note, one of the funnier rules for signing up for beta is no one is allowed to watch you play. I laughed and told my wife if i get in, shes gonna have to move her computer into the other room, because if she looks at my screen while im playing, MS is gonna get us 😛

[citation][nom]tu_illegalamigo[/nom]Awesome! This is one of my favorites, behind the unbeatable, ultimate (to me) RTS, CIV II gold multiplayer![/citation]
Civ 2 isn't an RTS unless they really changed up multiplayer in that. I never played Civ 2 multiplayer.

[citation][nom]sliem[/nom]Free-to-play is always good. It's a bait, but you don't have to take the bait.[/citation]

Like its the issue with Quake Live. It was free and now you have to pay for Premium content. But than again... there always will be a catch and fish 🙂
