Pot, meet kettle. Kettle, meet pot.

Seems ironic (not) that the two companies most often accused of such things are now going down this path.

Seems the universe really does have a sense of humor.....

I don't know why you guys complain about Google and privacy? I mean no one's forcing you to use Google. Don't like Google, then don't use Google, it's as simple as that. It's like how some folks believe Walmart is evil yet they love the low prices they offer despite the fact that Walmart's pursuit of low prices have killed many of their competitors. You can't have it both ways folks. Google offers a product for free, if you believe there's a privacy issue then don't use their services. I haven't seen any major privacy issues other then OMG google has all my info and they are a BIG corporation, they must be evil! Microsoft on the other hand charges you for many of their products and often doesn't give you what you ask for. ChromeOS in case the clueless out there didn't realize is OPEN-SOURCE. This means if you want to add your own browser to it, you can. It's just a question of whether you have the intelligence to do it versus Microsoft Windows. Well that's closed-source and there are many proprietary libraries. Good luck making a browser for Windows without shelling out money for a development kit. If Google keeps all my information and uses it for targetted ads, I am all for it. They have to make money somehow after all. If my government pressures Google for information on me then that's fine too. Maybe the real question is why do we expect a corporation to defend your privacy against your own government? Maybe you should take this up with the government instead of a third party? So my point is yes Google has a lot of information but I have yet to see them seriously misuse it. Some of you need to ditch your tinfoil hat...

foxalopex- We don't use Google- the problem with it is that it's impossible to get away from Google's ads. Everywhere you go you see those stupid "Ads by Google" things that drive you crazy. And yeah if I was Microsoft I would want to get at Google as well. Also Bing is actually a really good search engine (though frankly all search engines are just about equal nowadays). The thing holding Bing back is the fact that everyone uses Google and doesn't want/know how to change, and if they did change what would the huge advantage of using a different search engine be for them?

[citation][nom]ukee1593[/nom]FINALLY - Think back to the last time that you reformatted your computer ... It was almost impossible to use anything but BING or LIVE SEARCH because MICROSOFT FORCED YOU TO USE IT.[/citation]
[citation][nom]back_by_demand[/nom]Sounds like you are complaining about Microsoft to compensate for your own lack of knowledge.[/citation]
Haha +1. So yes, it is true that Microsoft products default to using Bing search, just like Google Chrome defaults to Google search (shocker there -_-). But it is extremely easy to change the search engine on both Chrome and IE.

As for Microsoft's complaints... I'm not sure what the European law is, but I would agree with Microsoft on some of these accusations (assuming they are true) that something should be done to get Google back in line.

It's fine to wish proper regulation on Google's monopoly, as all companies should be regulated, but Microsoft is not the company to start throwing stones. Google did in fact get to the #1 position by making the best product, Windows bribed and coerced their way to the top.

back_by_demand: You're smoking crack if you thing Bing is just as good as Google. I did a few test searches on Bing, the results I received were complete garbage. It reminded me of 90s searches, with the all of the odd results of a very naive algorithm. Google quite often returns atleast 2 pages of completely relevant results.

[citation][nom]back_by_demand[/nom]No, Bing is just as good a search engine, Google is using its market position to force competitors to the margins. All the anti-MS drones know exactly what I mean because they used the same arguement against Internet Explorer, but because its Google they suddenly forget all their old rationalisations?Short memory on some people...[/citation]

...Bing sucks. Awfully. I'd rather go back to using Yahoo before I set Bing as my default search provider. I searched for an Asus Xonar D1 sound card, and got motorcycle helmets in the product results. 'Nuff said.

It makes me wonder, does apple have to offer a Browser selection screen on macs purchased in europe? IMO they should all be forced to offer a choice.

And btw, I bought my last netbook in France and there wasn't a browser selection screen, I had to use IE to download Opera and manually uninstall IE afterwards... I wonder how come!

Google did in fact get to the #1 position by making the best product, Windows bribed and coerced their way to the top.

I think they made a real good search engine, but only by illegally gathering private information... and what about google toolbar??? That any good? I believe Google is just as coersive as MS, they're just more insidious.

[citation][nom]back_by_demand[/nom]Everyone, forget the companies involved for a moment. Two wrongs do not make a right, just because one company had anti-trust litigation issues, does not mean another company that does the same can be allowed to do so with impunity. One law for everyone or it's not a law at all.[/citation]
Any big company will constantly try to see how much that can get away with...M$ and Google are equally useless IMO

Wow, you are very short minded my friend. Try not to drink too much of the Tom's "regurgitation" hardware news koolaid for a sec and think about what you just said and ask yourself if Yahoo, M$ and-the-like GUESS what it is their customer's want or need as a service beyond what Google is doing.

I remember the time M$ came out with a video commercial about how Google was "recording" your keystrokes in the browser address URL and a M$ rep displayed such using Fiddler (to show HTTP traffic). Tom's hardware regurgitated the news and SO MANY people here bit-*******-hard hook-line-and-sinker that Google was the sons-of-bitches for privacy invasions...blah blah blah. But only a few SMART people actually knew that that is how Google set it up to provide the same "feature" for predicting what you were looking for; as if you were typing into the Google bar itself or in a browser that sports a Google search engine bar as well. M$ marketed it successfully because like I said, most everybody fell for it because they apparently believe everything they read. But what they didn't know is that M$ does the same thing with Bing and the Bing search bar in it's browser and any other browser that sports Bing...but M$ never included the predictability "feature" in their URL bar but they do in their Bing search bar. WTF? Moral of my story, until you know the facts...don't believe everything you hear...

Microsoft does have a point, Bing does suck in comparison. It's video results are pretty good though.

The "exclusive rights" to public domain works thing makes no sense at all though. I can't believe they would've tried to lock those down.

Another reason that MS is having suck huge search engine problems is that half of the web devs out there disallow the MS bot because it is a HUGE pipe hog that frackin wrecks your QoS. I just refuse to serve it thus my sites are indexed by everyone except MS. Make a better bot, you might get better results.
