News Microsoft launches Recall to Windows 11 general availability — Click to Do and Improved Search also coming

Recall. The feature with no conceivable purpose for a home user and MASSIVE privacy risks, that MS has spent untold millions developing and will eventually try and find a way to force it upon all users. What possible reason could they have for it? I'd rather just believe it's a case of a corporation being so completely removed from their customer base that they have no idea what they are doing anymore. Any other possibilities are quite unpalatable...

(Seemingly) thousands of forum denizens wailed and gnashed their teeth and promised up and down and left and right that if Microsoft ever implemented that creepy Recall feature into their Windows OS, they would switch to Linux; or even buy a Mac.

Watch, as every last one of them slinks with their tails between their legs, in defeat. Watch, as all of them, all of them, accept their defeat and fold like a cheap suit. "Yes sir! May I have another!" is what they will say. Watch. Microsoft says sit down and shut up, and they will comply. They will obey.

I guarantee it.

It could also be the latest hype to "increase shareholder value". That's the main goal for corporations, second to none. This is a great way to leverage the AI bubble...

In 2025 there's extraordinarily little that keeps someone tied to one OS, especially as we move deeper into "Software as a service". Outside of businesses, which have a multitude of reasons to be on the OS they use, the only real things keeping someone on Windows who is dissatisfied to the extent they claim over Microsoft's actions over switching to Mac or Linux are games that only run on Windows, or refusal to change.

I am going to assemble new PC in the near future. I am going with Linux as it is my primary work system. I was going to put Windows as a dual boot for those rare cases when I need Windows (not even for games or Photoshop - occasionally I needed to see how my software works from Windows). But with all of this I am in serious doubt I will go beyond VM.
It's like a minefield: the way to setup Windows without logging into MS account changes weekly, undesirable "features" are added constantly, and now this. This spyware requires serious system integration to behave efficiently, so I am not holding my breath that simple turning it off will actually do so.
Just no.

Will these features draw new PC buyers?

I think Microsoft is going to learn that many of these new feature are going to keep people from buying new PC's.

Would not be surprised if it just draws new Mac buyers TBH.
Meanwhile, Apple is getting raked over coal for the colossal failure that is Apple Intelligence.
The general opinion ranges from "Useless" to "Bad".

Run this command from an elevated prompt to uninstall it. In my build of Win11 26100.3909, Recall showed up nowhere in my system so since it wasn't in any place it was supposed to be, I thought it had not been installed. But with the following command obtained from Microsoft direct, I decided to run it just to make sure it wasn't already in my system. Well, what do you know--it found the install, took a minute or so running to uninstall it, and reported "successfully uninstalled."

DISM /Online /Disable-Feature /FeatureName:"Recall"

OK, I doubt it's spyware, to get that out of the way, but for me, it's just a very annoying feature I cannot imagine a need for. So it appears I uninstalled it even though it never appeared to have been installed with the build...😉 The command appears to work, if you are interested.

Moved to linux and didn't looked back. If the games i play stop working in linux, i will just move to other games. There is plenty that do work in linux.

I've never made that claim, but I do have a Linux Mint PC next to my Windows PC. I can transition at my own pace.

I don't believe Microsoft for a heartbeat. They say it is optional but they absolutely will make it mandatory. They say "We will never look at your Recall Files". They will wait a year and then say they will monitor your files for "Quality Control" purposes. I don't want Microsoft looking a screen grabs of my Retirement accounts and Bank accounts, or anything else. This is just another useless feature that Microsoft is implementing to sell private information. If I want to save something on my computer....... I click Save.

Already switched my PC to ubuntu as well as my server, primarily using a MacBook Pro these days for anything not games-related and so far Steam is working on the PC just fine. Just have to work out SO's PC since she's more into creative software.
This was one reason I didn't want to move to Windows 11, but not the only reason.

Only useful answer here. 👍

+ breaking in to program files/ Windows apps , and deleting files that MS always keeps even though you deleted the app.

Moving to linux ? What a joke.

You can block microsoft updates forever, even in Home edition, so it won't even get installed.

Would be nice if MS could concentrate on fixing Windows File Explorer issues, and bring more customization to the OS. All these AI features are temporary toys to be quickly forgotten. I'd like MS to increase Windows efficiency, more work with less clicks.

While I am sure there are plenty of people who dont care about AI or even want it by the same token there is a large percentage of people who dont want intrusive AI like CoPilot and Recall embedded in their operating system and forced on them.

Not really. I intend to ensure that for the next year I will upgrade to PCs that are NOT copilot.
In the long term though you are probably right.
