And people thought there was outcry and bad press over confusion of the different types of Vista versions, that's nothing compared to what people will say when they buy a netbook / pc with windows that won't run their programs.

"so why have a crippled version of Windows 7 out?"

To get it on the machine.

They are counting on people paying microsoft the money for upgrades to something useful.

It's a pure market share and money grab, nothing more.

Folks are missing the point... right now if MS doesn't sell Windows XP on the netbook it is essentially a lost sale as most are incapable of running Vista.

For MS this is a free ride, WinXP R&D costs have already been recouped, the sustaining cost and cost to port XP to a netbook has to be minimal, so basically whatever MS is selling this for is PURE PROFIT. They could sell ot for $5 and they would be laughing all the way to the bank.

So in response to the question posed in the article, why is MS so interested in cornering the market (and offer such a large discount).... well it's because WinXP is pure (profit) gravy at this point.

Every single article that mentions an OS invariably ends into "Windows is shit, Linux and Mac OS is the best, etc". You know what? If you're unhappy with the offerings of Microsoft, go build your own OS. We live in a digital world where user-generated content is at it's peak. You don't have the skills to create an OS by yourself? Then why the hell are you whining? Like it or not, Microsoft has the best OS out there. Is it the most stable? No. Is it the more stylish? We can argue. Is it the fastest? Hell no! But it works. It works, it's liked and it's adopted by the majority.

[citation][nom]A Stoner[/nom]"people will be too scared to try anything other than what we are offering, cause they are all to stupid to figure it out on their own.[/citation]

The very people you are calling stupid are the same people you're trying to "protect" with your standing against Microsoft. Unless you're doing all this for yourself. In which case, use Linux and shut up.

Don't think XP or Vista is worth 19,99$, 14,99$ or even 9,99$? Considering Linux is free, what do you think it's WORTH? If the price is representative of the value of a software, does this implies Linux is crap? I know I'd rather pay for something that will benefit me than having for free something that will do half the stuff I need. With that said, I think that Windows, whatever version, is slightly overpriced.

Zak out.

You have taken completely out of context what I wrote. I was writing from a hypothetical point of view of the person who was speaking for Microsoft who said "It's a pretty robust operating system for customers at the price points we're giving it to them," I was looking at the whole article plus this quote to come up with a thought pattern behind the actions of microsoft. A story, not a fact, and not my thoughts about people, Microsoft's.

That person is paid to make positive (even optimistic) remarks about their produtcs. You, however, make claims of your own opinion. This is not a problem at all, it's what those posts are all about. However, putting words into a third party's mouth is another thing. You say that's not your thoughts about people but Microsoft's. I didn't read anywhere in this article that Microsoft thinks that the common user is stupid and Microsoft is not here to admit or deny that allegation.

Well, some people (like myself), want the best of all worlds, and triple boot linux, windows xp and windows 7 on their netbooks. each one runs flawlessly, and each has it's own capabilities that make it better/worse than the others. a new OS is nothing that can't be learned with a little googling and intuition. os makers aren't idiots.
