Actually, all the educated ppl I know are aware of how to get any version of windows, fully registered and untouched, for free. It's the dumb ones who think they have to go to a store and buy a disk.

Not saying anything about whether piracy is ok or not, just that ppl who are more "educated" usually know how to not only do it, but do it right. And when you can either get something for free or for ~$200, it's not a decision thats based on your level of education, but on your morals, conscience, and financial situation.

A lot of people here are mistaking what is meant by education.

What they mean is that users educated in the dangers and possible risks in using a pirated version of windows are more likely to purchase a legal copy than those who do not know the risks.

It's stating the obvious. This has nothing to do with what level of education a person has in the classical sense.

[citation][nom]Brother Shrike[/nom]In my experience, "uneducated" people don't pirate windows. That's not to say that all "educated" people pirate windows, that's obviously not true. But it's people who are "educated," or think they are, that pirate windows.[/citation]

The most I have ever seen pirated copies of Windows installed? During my training for certifications. When you wipe out a machine 30 times a month activation becomes a real chore and WGA is fun for that too. Fun times fun times.... We also learned about the EULA and how WGA detects what are pirated VS legit and how sometimes legit software can be detected as counterfeit. In IT this is all relevant especially if you have something like 500 machines and down time can cost you upwards of 200K an hour. I do not think the education has anything to do with schooling or training or income in this respect. Sometimes people pirate out of convenience rather then income or some moral dilemma. (In my experience this was more often the case then not)

Now I wonder about these new SLIC BIOS's since they all use the same key from a manufacturer maybe activation is less of an issue if you reinstall 8,000 times on one machine. That could eliminate the need for cracked "student" editions.... Of course that requires an investment in new hardware.

[citation][nom]ubernoobie[/nom]One of my friends have pirated win7 and he learned how to update even though it says it's not geniune[/citation]

The torrent version of Windows 7 ( all editions and both x86 & x64 bit ) can work and be updated before they were even oficially released.. No bugs, not viruses no nothing. Have personally tested multiple of those annd have installed on friend's PCs that never pay for software on their PCs..

Me myself was using those till they were released and got my copy. Updating was for me like its still for them. Nothing different from being with the legal copy. Update Windows -> click -> click and done... Just as if you have the genuine copy since Ive usedboth..

... microsoft should thank the pirates in the first place... if not for the pirates, i think, windows would not be so popular at all...

[citation][nom]buwish[/nom]I dunno, one would think that the more someone knows about software and such, the more likely they'll be in a position to partake in pirating (DL or UL).[/citation]

Quite the opposite is true. The more you know about software, the more you know how people depend on it for their income. Paying for what you use helps it to continue to be developed, keeps developer's kids fed, and helps spawn a better future of computing.

I miss the Tom's of the 90s where it wasn't quite so full of ignorant twats who think overclocking and knowing how to double-click Setup.exe is some kind of mastery of computing. Reminds me of Newegg reviews where people always click 'highly technical' as their skill level, then raise hell about how a $30 RAID controller was a crappy investment.

I do condoned piracy, but the current punishment in US court are too harsh for offenders.

If you don't want to pay for your OS, you have only one good choice... LINUX. If we all use Linux, more companies would be force to develop for the platform, and you would get better library of software for the tool you are willing to pay for.

Too many people like to complain about Microsoft, but not nearly as many are willing to switch. But don't switch to Apple, that would equivalent to switching prison cells in jail.

I agree somewhat here... but people who knowingly pirate software aren't likely to care...

However, for those people who may have illegitimate software without their knowledge (it really does happen) or the computer illiterate who were told by their "computer guy" that he can get them a free copy... this will help. If nothing else it'll scare them into not pirating.

pocketdrummer you're such an idiot. Movies, music, games.. Keep breaking record sales .. Go figure.. make a good product, make more money.. So piss off.

How about people who are educated realize they shouldn't steal from people that designed the software they LOVE to use? Otherwise you don't really give a rat's ass (stupidity) and you are uneducated with a less than stellar background. Or maybe you just live with your parents and don't care about ANYTHING because you have never had your ass whooped. MOOOOOOM, IM HUNGRY. Get a life, glad there are some smart people left in the world who care about the lively hood of others.

[citation][nom]serialsniper14[/nom]Yeah I've got a friend who used a cracked version of Windows. Not only was he able to download updates "from Microsoft," but the updates he downloaded were full of trojans and malware, which completely crashed his hard drive and overclocked his processor until the inside started smoking. Hoorah for Genuine Windows 7![/citation]

Yeah, and I'm Batman

It's a crock of shit as usual. You notice that the groups that crack software often do it within a few days and it takes these billion dollar companies months to find a way to patch them (if ever), and then there is a release and it cracked again. Give up and start making your shit way cheaper so people by tons of the damn things when you release something. Same goes with games if you sold a new game for 20 bucks and not 60 just about every game would be a million seller, because people wouldn't debate so much over what they wanted to buy when they could get three games for the price of one and not have to wait for a year or two for the game to go in the bargain bin. Take it from China retards make shit cheaper and you'll sell more of it. $59.99 for a game that "might" be good is too much to risk for the measure of how many games come out. If MS sold their OS for 20-30 bucks they'd never have to worry about someone pirating the damn things, but they are greedy assholes like the rest, so they'll just have to waste more money failing to patch things that can be cracked in hours or days.

Pretty good strategy... call people who pirate stuff "stupid."

Btw, a very untrue statement. They may have more nerve than some people, but that doesn't mean more stupid.

maybe "educated" market pirates less.. because if they have money for university, then they would probably have money to spend on windows.. Although there are many circumstances in each country that could contribute to the sway in statistics.

Why are people assuming educated = school? Microsoft is talking about people being educated about the "dangers" of using an illegal copy of Windows. Not what level of school they completed, nor their income bracket. I can see we don't have a lot of "educated" readers around here, thinking before they type.

[citation][nom]andyviant[/nom]Wow - this is diluted. Problem is no one knows how to purchase responsibly and save for...ANYTHING. The people who don't HAVE money now because they're living paycheck to paycheck would not have money if they doubled their salary. They'd just be "better consumers"[/citation] Okay so let me get this straight. The price of gas has doubled. The price of utilities (energy and natural gas) have skyrocketed. The cost of food (pringles were $.79 3 years ago, now they are $1.69, as an example) has gone up. People with medical problems have seen their health care costs go up 1000%+ and all the while the workforce of america has taken pay cuts, or salary freezes. you're right, Mine is "diluted" and its americans fault that they dont have money to live.

Hoorah for Genuine Windows 7![/citation]That's NOTHING!I have a friend who also used a pirated version of Windows and the updates he downloaded were infected by a new and very dangerous malware called "DIPUTS"This malware, DIPUTS, completely re-wrote his hard drive. Not only that, it erased all DVDs that were even close to the computer. The malware recalibrated his refrigerator's coolness setting so all his ice cream went melty. It demagnetized the strips on all his credit cards, screwed up the tracking on the television and used subspace field harmonics to scratch any music CDs he tried to play. But it didn't stop there! DIPUTS gave his ex-girlfriend his new phone number. It mixed Kool-aid into his fishtank. It drank all his beer and left dirty socks on the coffee table when company came over. The malware also put a dead hamster in the back pocket of his good suit pants and hid his car keys whenever he was late for work. This terrible malware also made him fall in love with a penguin. It gave him nightmares about circus midgets. DIPUTS poured sugar in his gas tank and shaved off both his eyebrows while dating his girlfriend behind his back and billing the dinner and hotel room to his Discover card.It moved his car randomly around parking lots so he could never find it, too. It kicked his dog. It left libidinous messages on his boss's voice mail with his voice! I tell you, this malware, DIPUTS, is insidious and subtle. It is dangerous and terrifying to behold. It is also a rather interesting shade of mauve. So watch out before you dare use a pirated version of Windows .... 😀(This was old, but I couldn't resist 😉)

You guys do realize that what he said is technically possible, right? Finding a "workaround" to "Genuine" Windows Updates that redirect to a different site altogether, one that installs malware, malware that overclocks the CPU causing it to start smoking?

All that's entirely possible. If you're stupid and you decide you're too good for antivirus it is entirely conceivable that you would also be too stupid to see through an article purporting to provide access to Windows Update.

And a virus that overclocks a CPU is entirely feasible. You can change clock speeds from within Windows with a variety of different software. It's entirely possible for a virus built on cracked software from a manufacturer like Gigabyte, Asus, or Asrock could access the BIOS from within Windows and change clock speeds.

Even the smoking is possible. If you're too stupid to install A/V and too stupid to see through an article claiming to give you full access to Windows Update, then you're also exactly the sort of person that would choose to spend a pittance on a PSU yet spend enough money to buy overclockable components.

There are a ton of people that buy K series processors and never overclock them. It's a really stupid thing to do, but plenty of people do it.

And have you ever tried to overclock with a crappy PSU? The thing is literally liable to go up in smoke.

So, while he may in fact be lying, and his issues may not be directly related to the fact that his "friend's" Windows was cracked, everything he mentioned is entirely possible.

As a result it seems a little unreasonable to ridicule him like that.

Thank you for the defense friend. What I said was in fact true but it's entirely possible that it was unrelated, as the same person had a lot of "non-genuine" and cracked material on his computer. I'm sure even his A/V was cracked. But to anyone who doesn't believe me and spends time thinking up insults and long, humorous anecdotes: guess what? I forgot this thread existed and I haven't lost any sleep over the last 5 years for all the ridicule. Thank you for making me laugh, stay behind your keyboards and keep it coming!

To Microsoft: I'm still awaiting payment. I would really like to buy AC4 on the marketplace, but we don't use M$ any more. An e-check will be fine.

GO SEAHAWKS! #LoB
