Windows 8.1 isnt as bad as people lead on. At walmart im seeing more and more laptops with touchscreen for under $400, so at least 8 is making that a standard and reducing the cost of those screens

Perhaps because it's:
#1: Still receiving updates, unlike XP
#2: They have improved security measures, far better than XP
#3: XP is like a boat with holes - but nobody is going to be fixing them from now on.

@People talking about MS not being the only company to detect spyware... you clearly don't get the premise of why this is a problem. Go sit in the corner.

Wow, well done. Businesses might not upgrade, but why in the hell would they need to come to a computer repair shop anyway?

I'm referring largely to consumers. Aka, the stupid people who buy $300 machines and expect them to give the world. The ones who built the internet on cats. The ones who think Farmville is the cutting edge of gaming technology. Those people. Those are the people that are going to be a problem - companies will probably figure out a way of minimizing their liability due to XP - though I expect we'll see breaches before long.

I fully understand the lack of inclination toward upgrading - the people I work for still run on what I'm guessing is either pre-XP or classic XP (I don't have enough system access to really know... it's all reskinned crap anyway). People are cheap and businesses are cheaper. The difference is that businesses understand the requirements of not upgrading - or they can be sued. I am convinced it will be a trump card in lawsuits surrounding breaches if it's discovered they were running XP.

If we're being completely realistic here, it's not even so much that it'll help keep my employer in the money, I'm simply a very firm believer in people learning the hard way - if they have to part with their dollars for their mistake, the better.

Probably not, but 8.1 still was showing that start screen so even i'm avoiding it at all costs. Others who have already tried W8 and hated is probably thinking the same. It's like showing a new kind of car and people having all sorts of problems with it, they're not going to care whether the company fixes them they're going to keep thinking that car is bad. The same thing with W8. I haven't tried 8.1 nor will i plan to because W8 left a sour taste in my mouth that can't can't be rinsed out (i was so frustrated with the start screen), i've already decided to make the switch to Linux. Thankfully though i didn't spend anything on just trying W8 out with the preview.

I'm fairly fond of linux, but it does not work with some of the software I need to be able to use, and I feel it still has some usability issues. Otherwise, it's a great option. all governments should use it, to that they do not have to upgrade the programs they use nearly as often.

Bwahaha! That is the typical response from people who "like" Windows 8. And shows the problems with Windows 8.

"Its not as bad" or "its not that bad". Things you don't hear about the iPhone... not even the iPhone4.

Most people who "hate" Win8 mostly hate the "Modern UI" and how "Modern" apps are full-screen by default. Most of that is easily circumvented by installing Classic Shell to get a real start-menu back on the desktop and installing the usual desktop apps just like people have been doing since forever anyway.

For the most part, not a big deal.
