Wow, there are a lot myopic MS suck ups in here. I had no idea that so many people has such a skewed view of the past.

MS got where it was, not because they built a superior operating system, but because they had almost no competition. If Steve Jobs had not been such a controlling greedy psychopath the whole world would run on Apple right now and not Microsoft because back in the days that MS climbed to the top the Macintosh was by far the better system.

BTW, I don't understand how knowing how to use an operating system better prevents random system freezes that loose all your work even though you just saved it.

All of this trash talk about Windows Vista. You must follow like sheep because I was using it since LAUNCH and I rarely encountered a problem, if any. The one's that were having a difficult time were consumers who wanted low powered tech but higher end options on their OS. Now it wasn't the most efficient, I will say, but at the same time it laid sooo much groundwork and the base for Windows 7 that everyonneeee praises (strange, huh?).

WOW, unbelievable, how many retarded comments are flowing from MS indoctrinated fan boys on here.. You have to be a total idiot if you think this company is innovative and posses a quality product.

Microsoft doesn't sell, they steal.. People don't buy Windows, MS shoves their operating system down your throat whether you want it or not, it's pre-installed on all new PCs in the electronic stores.

I used Microshit products since DOS 6.22 and Win 3.1, and was a total MS fan boy during Win NT4 (use to run Softimage 3.7 Extreme on NT4), but eventually the more I worked on MS products, I realized that they're total piece of merde. I got fed up with system crashes, security leaks, spyware, viruses, corrupted registry, DRM and Microshit's disgusting business practices. I switched to linux and I couldn't be happier.

[citation][nom]Zingam[/nom]The same old crap plagued by performance and security issues as usual!!! And it is grossly overpriced. They could sell their products at 1/4 of the price and still make tons of money.Windows 7 is nothing but a service pack to Windows 2000. There isn't really anything useful in it that you could not get from third party applications and most of the time for free.I've been sitting in front of a PC for nearly 30 years now.[/citation]

If you're comparing modern day Windows security to that of 2000 you must not remember it as well as you think you do (or don't have a personal Windows 7 computer).

And one thing that you should remember is the BSOD's. Those, from what I understand, were often caused by drivers that had access to the kernel, something Microsoft did away with in Vista. I have never had a BSOD I didn't cause myself due to overclocking and I've had Windows 7 installed since it was released.

Overpriced it may be (like pretty much any major software suite) but that is not a good reason to hate a company. It is a good contributing factor (like my dislike for Apple) but it is not good enough.

In terms of performance, I admit I'm not too knowledgeable on this subject due to the fact that I have a medium-high end computer. I will recognize that Windows 7 does require a significant amount of RAM to function optimally.

And, to your last sentence, I will reiterate that any PC at a major business DOES NOT COUNT when analyzing microsoft's products. Ignorant or incompetent IT departments, egregious use of legacy software, complicated networking setups, overbearing corporate security software, and a lack of personal control over settings that would make the user experience better make business level OS use a very poor indicator for the platform's performance.

Plus the fact that many companies don't upgrade their computers when they upgrade their OS's and thus put Windows 7 on a Windows XP rig that barely met those system requirements.

Really? I have had major BSOD issues on a new high end computer that I build myself with quality components before I ever installed ANY drivers.

Yes Windows 7 is great, I'm using it right now. But people in here don't even remember Vista which came out in 2007, not exactly ancient history. By Microsoft's own admission that was possibly their worst operating system and their biggest mistake EVER, and there have been so big ones over the years. (They claimed Win 95 would run on a 386 with 4 mb of RAM!) It's the reason Win 7 is so good now. In fact Win 7 is the ONLY Microsoft Windows based operating system that hasn't had MAJOR problems when released. All others had to wait for at least the first service pack to get them to where they were only mildly frustrating to use.

@guardianangel42

"Alright, how does that reflect on the Microsoft of Today?"

Apart from the problems I mentioned earlier, Win 7 is ridiculously bloated, a resource hog, and has horrible work-flow (yeah, I have this piece of merde, it came pre-installed on my machine). Even though MS junk comes pre-installed on the computers, there is a reason why people switch from windows to linux, apple, mozilla, google etc..

"complicated networking setups and overbearing corporate security software" Thank you for bringing that up, it just shows what is required to keep pathetic MS products secure..

You can't expect users or corporations to spend millions of dollars upgrading their PC's and their security every few years because the new version of windows has a new looking start button.

As for the system performance, 95% of supercomputers run linux, not windows.. Something to think about!

Win 7 "sales" do not reflect the actual sales of Win 7, they reflect the sales of new PC's which come pre-installed with Win 7. Forcing a product upon a customer to maintain a monopoly, what a disgusting business practice..

Why are people calling w7 overpriced? Look at the price of a game now days. W7 costs 2-3x the cost of one (depending on premium or pro). Now compare what they do.

A modern game is certainly not simple, but it's only a game. Start with a customized (but still premade) engine. Add scenarios, models, textures, audio, etc, etc. Test some, market some, possibly add support in the form of a few patches.

Windows is a freakin OS. W7 is an OS that manages to actually be intuitive without forcing you to do it their way (like apple). It is hundreds of times more complicated than any game. Support is not a few patches but hundreds (it'd be nice if they release it perfect the first time but at least the problems as they come up).

The only reason they don't need to charge $5-10k for it is because so many people buy it. Unlike physical products, selling software to 2 ppl is only slightly more expensive than to 1 person.

You want overpriced software? Adobe, AutoDesk, and other companies charging in the thousands for their suites. They're overpriced because they sell to companies who can (usually) afford it and need it to compete.

oh and I love linux, but not for my personal computer. For servers, though, it's either linux or an oracle solution.

Ubuntu and the other "windows alternatives" are painful to use though. I enjoy their customization but it comes at too high of a price.

Wow - those complaining about vista? are you serious? If you have waited like a month before jumping on that bandwagon you would have heard the warning cries from early adopters. I seem to remember that they offered a free upgrade path too? [could be wrong]. When a company releases a bad product - you do not have to buy it! We should all know that MS are pretty good when it comes to testing new stuff on us the customer.

Those complaining about Win 7 being a resource hog etc and the bloatware? You are blaming MS because Dell/Samsung installed about 20 applications that you dont want/need/use that all want to start at logon? I would love to see your system tray! recognise any of those icons? Learn to compute.

I paid ~£100 for a copy of win 7 pro x64 and that was money well spent. It's solid as a rock [oh wait i know how to build a PC too - that helps...]

If I was buying a new machine and didnt want to pay for windows I wouldnt buy it! Get a mac, you can get prebuilt linux machines these days too. There is a choice, the fact is people know how to use MS and stick with it.

I also work in IT at a major UK business and anyone relying on work experiences to form an opinion isnt really getting a real picture. We have to hack windows about so much to make it work with all the crappy legacy software and hardware around the business that its no wonder we have problems... keeps me in a job though..

[citation][nom]freggo[/nom]... and your point is ?[/citation]

That MS is popular and HE TOO (plus his entire family) likes their products, especially XBOX.

You could say in this context the point of one person saying "Me too" is pointless...but to say you don't understand the point?

[citation][nom]yorgos[/nom]how they sell it when everything out there, laptops and oem PCs, are either Win or Mac?that's forcing people to buy your product.[/citation]
New customers in developing markets or first time PC buyers in existing markets

Contrary to popular belief, not everyone has a PC already, there are approx 1.8 billion PCs in the world and approx 7 billion people, as far as anyone in the marketing divisions of every computer company, be it MS or Apple or anyone else, thats 5.2 billion potential customers that haven't been sold to yet.
