Only at relativistic speed differences is time a matter of opinion. In the shared frame of reference we all occupy boot speeds are significantly faster, rendering speeds are also faster. This is not a matter of subjective feeling, it is a matter of objective measurement.

You can still make a full system image backup, AS WELL AS the new options for libraries/desktop and contacts restore (also do you realise what is actually being backed up in libraries and what that implies?). Microsoft’s decision to force you to back up on an external drive is only validated more by your opinion that copying files onto the same drive constitutes an adequate backup. Saving users from themselves is a good thing.

If you don’t want to have your credentials stored online, Windows 8 doesn’t force you to! However if you don’t’ happen to work at a top secret agency and you want the added convenience of having your settings backed up online, you now have that as an option.

by what comparison is 4 million sold copies a pathetic record? win8 was released on 10/26, the 4 mil mark was announced on 10/30 and i bet that sales figure didn't even include those sold so far on 10/30 before ballmer made the announcement. so that's 4 mil in 4 days. doesn't sound too bad to me.
