Actually, I THINK the "Activation" resets every 180 days for Microsoft Products, meaning every 180 days you can re-install the OS on any PC you want, so long as it's not detected on another machine that's running the same license at the same time.

(Pretty sure every time you're running a PC with a net connection, it periodically sends a packet to Microsoft with the license info and IP address/and a little system ID tag, to make sure it's not running on multiple machines at the same time.)

Or something like that...

I this MS should sell two products of win7 - One for home and one for business. Also I think the box art is just plain old ugly. But I can look past the box cause win7 is bitchin.

Do you want fries (directx 11) with that?
How about a shake (wireless lan capabilities) with that?
Can we interest you in a desert (screen resolutions higher than 1280 x 800)?
Do you want a to go bag (monthly/yearly subscription)?

Or maybe they can team up with American Express:
Base software package $25
DirectX upgrade $10
Going from Starter to Home Basic $125
Upgrading From Home Basic to Home Premium $75
Annual fees for getting updates, Priceless!

[citation][nom]crom[/nom]Windows should be just 2 versions. Desktop and server. All the rest just serves to confuse average consumers. Sure Microsoft wants to make a profit, but push that profit over to OEM versions for hardware manufacturers.[/citation]

I love the freedom of choice, but at the same time you're right.
It does serve to confuse.

If the feature doesn't exist, I just get the program to give me that feature.
For example, Windows 7 integrated .ISO burning utility. It's a awesome wonderful thing. Prevented having to deal with the emulator issues originially in Win7. Now I don't use it because I don't have DL DVD discs for larger .ISO's.

A server/home edition does make sense.
Just give us the damned features and don't put ridiculous limits on the software. such as the Vista 64bit RAM caps at different versions (who thought thiat was a good idea?)

As other said, OEM is the direction I'm going hopefully.
If I have a legit license anyways, I don't care if the version is ripped just to unlock a few extra features.

[citation][nom]starryman[/nom]I thank each of the -1's I got from my original post. I'm sure M$ paid very well.[/citation]

I'm all for different versions given these conditions:

1) More basic versions will be more efficient due to a lack of extraneous features.

2) More advanced versions will include features only a minority of users will find useful.

I am against all artificial price schemes.

Don't know, don't care.

Running Linux, with 3D interface (like Home Premium), CIFS AD functionalities (like Pro) and a media center (like Ultimate) for zero cost (like Starter OEM).

Why would I pay more for less?

Because like every other Linux user you are too poor to buy new hardware and software. Myself however have plent cash flow and am probably more intelligent than you, hence why I have a cushy job which more than pays the bills. You see, I am better than you. I hope this post makes you feel bad because it make me feel good. I like the finer things in life. Linux and old Pentiums... like wine in a box. /sigh. Poor people. So, you go sudo apt-get all the cheap hand me down software you like on your 56k modem, I will collect my discs of Windows 7 Ultimate from my 10 user license MSDN subsciption or wait for Enterprise from our MS EA Agreement. Red Cross much?

@Donuts: wth?

Someone wrote here Desktop and server versions would be enough, and most of you seem to agree on that. But do you all get pirated versions or what? The stripped down Home versions are always cheaper and do the trick for MOST users, but sometimes, especially in offices, they NEED more security and network features (Like domain) and that's sick to think they will buy server versions for every single machine.

Ane vice versa, ordinary people won't give a f*ck about domain and network security policies that a PRO version will give because off course if there was only two versions, it'd be pro and server, so 230$ and 400$ instead of 130, 230, 300, 400, and so on.

Imagine if there was only ONE office version? SIMPLE!!! You get EVERY software of the suite!!! for one price! ain't that simple!??! ONE SIMPLE PRICE 400$!!! instead of 130$ if you just want Word Excel.

Sorry, I don't buy that. I prefer to have customers pay for what they need. Screw those who don't know what they're doing and get confused on 4 or 5 versions. It's a chance they won't be choosing a linux distro anytime soon.

I really don't get it. It'd be cool to choose to pay 10$ less for choosing not to have PAINT. But no, you people see it as a way for MS to make more money: oh they'll charge 10$ extra for paint!. what the hell, if you don't want to pay, then just don't!!!

One thing I hear often here: Oh a new service is being offered here, oh we will have to pay for this again, there isn't enough bills to pay, blablabla... JUST DON'T TAKE THE F*CKIN SERVINCE THEN!

oh the humanity...

Okay, to everybody who says "Microsoft should only have 2 versions, home and pro."

That's exactly what they did. There is "Home Premium" for normal users, and "Business" for business users. Simple as that.

All the other versions aren't available for retail. They are only for OEM's and developing markets and you cannot buy them off the shelf at best buy or futureshop.

If you are a computer developer or high-end user, there is an optional "Ultimate" upgrade if you need the all of those extra features.

Is that clear enough for everybody?!

Get rid of the windows logo, and just have a big-@$$ chrome "7" on the box, with "ultamate" or "home Premium" or whatever written below.

Yeah, i should work in their packaging design department.

this looks lame, vista had better boxes than these!
come on, there are so many super designers out there, use their imagination
