This whole thing is way overhyped, in my opinion. Google already collects info about how you use their services (if you want to complain about that, go use a service that isn't FREE). The only change here is that they're now connecting the data they already have across multiple products they operate. The data is already there, they're just changing the way they analyze it. That's the cost of using stuff for free on Google. If you expected to use a free service without any data gathering and such, then you need a lesson in economics.

How about they never stuck their nose into your information when there was meaningful competition and Google was still small, but now it has a de-facto monopoly they know you can't go anywhere else so you either accept them knowing which way your dick hangs or you live like an Amish person.
 
A sure sign that Microsoft is out of touch? "And to help remind people of these alternatives, we’re placing a series of ads in some major newspapers this week" I'd like to see a poll of how many people under 40 actually read a newspaper.
