not any better than a company paying a website to post a positive article. most of these companies are co-owned by the parent companies, and are basically required to do it.

Upvoting positive comments about Xbone? Good luck finding one. Making a positive comment about Xbone? What is there positive to say? PR manager for Microsoft, next season on Dirty Jobs.

And the sinking ship continues to burn...
No surprises here, everyone who's ever read internet comments knows this happens. What is surprising is Microsoft's continued indifference and now perhaps antagonism towards reviews and user input. Everyone told them Windows 8 wasn't suitable for desktops, particularly in a corporate environment, everyone told them their phone wasn't up to snuff, and everyone told them gamers and retailers weren't interested in a propietized box that charges for used games.
Their responses? A $1.5 Billion marketing campaign, Microsoft stores that just copied Apple, and now harrassing the semi-honest users of reddit. Small wonder there are so many comments to be voted down...

Same shit goes for that so-called OS, "Windows h8". This isn't flash news people! Microsoft's products are mostly crap ever since Steve Ballshit became the CEO if I'm not mistaken. Microsoft had MUCH better products in the past - now the whole touch era got them starting with the wrong foot and they GOTTA keep going that way.
Otherwise it would be a huge shame for them to state they finally opened their eyes and realized how crappy and fucked up their software is, apologize to a lot of customers and start making actual software(I wish they did that, honestly), not tetris-style bullshit and other stupid reiterations of what has previously been released in the '90s.
But anyway, as a customer and someone who has quite a considerable influence both on many of his friends and on many people, I do my best to drive people away from this sequence of crappy products from Microsoft - and apparently I am not the only one doing that - neither among my techy friends nor among other people from around the world that I get in touch with). It's always been funny to think Google adopted the old Microsoft way with their Android, and Microsoft went back to the '90s instead of taking advantage of what they had already achieved at the time. I guess it's easy to see why Android devices are definitely the ones to get when compared to any "Windows Phone" device. Hunger and laziness are two major problems at Microsoft and I really hope they keep paying (you read that right) for that. A 15-year old kid would be better at designing software GUI than these "experienced"(between comas because it really doesn't look like it) "engineers" who should be either more creative or part of the US' unemployment rate.
I am really sorry to state I am (actually, I used to be 🙁 ) a Microsoft fan.

So, any further unfounded allegations you want to put forward?
OK so it probably is likely, but only the same way it is also likely Apple, Samsung and Google have all been doing the same to spam and troll tech boards to diss their competitiors.
I don't agree with the whole "black arts" thing, very negative

Doesn't surprise me a bit and I'm sure they're doing it on a lot more sites than Reddit. This is becoming somewhat common nowadays. When you see somebody with one post and it's a page-long advertisement for something, it's pretty obvious they're just spamming various boards with it.

Does is happen? I'm sure it does. It MS the only one? Not a chance in hell.
"You're an MS astroturfer!" is a favorite refrain for Apple/Android fanboys, on more than a few tech sites, whenever anyone has anything positive to say about MS. In their addled minds, it's an easy way to dismiss (and a tough accusation to disprove) any notion that a MS product might work better for some people than their chosen platform.

Hey Toms! Why don't you go sift through the comments on Windows 8 articles and look for comments that are from obvious Microsoft shills? There have been TONS of them. They repeat company talking points and product names in perfect detail. They always try to spin the product in a positive light. They do not participate on other articles because they only get paid for positive comments on Microsoft articles. There are a ton of people like that around leading to mass bannings on NeoGAF, Kotaku, and other sites. It has been an enormous problem ever since Windows 8 came out. You can tell when their contracts lapse or switch sites too based on their posting behaviors.

well of course they won't respond to the accusation, its one of the lowest froms of unethical business practices that isn't illegal (yet). The fact MS is doing this is not suprising at all. I think after many years of MS on pc , and xbox in my living room , I'm finally ready to see this company burn. Years ago I defending them because they did centrallize PC design and software standards withy windows ,. but now windows isn't even that enjoyable of an OS. and at this point I don't care if software wedges again like the older days of 80's computers. Microsoft has to either get their s--- together or get out of the way for something better. Suffice to say xbone will not be doing any boning in my living room ever.

Any proof? Seeing a couple of people from MS on reddit is anecdotal at best.
Maybe this author should do her own research.

Redditor airmandan conducted his own investigation, and came up with the following:
1.In the original post that set off the entire firestorm, no proof whatsoever was posted that the submitter worked for any marketing firm or had been to any Microsoft office (pun not intended). It was literally one giant wall of text with National Enquirer-style allegations, and not one iota of supporting evidence.
2. In the comments on that post, several people chimed in with similar stories. One individual claimed to work for Waggener Edstrom, whose client list does include Microsoft, and alleged that this PR firm was "really trying to ramp up their presence on blog sites and Reddit in particular."
3.I have since communicated with Peter Wootton, Senior Vice President for Waggener Edstrom, who reviewed his firm's employee and contractor records and found no trace of the individual in (2) ever having worked for or with them, and as such that individual would have no knowledge of any of the operations of that firm. I reviewed the data he sent me and found it compelling enough to assert that it is true and correct.

Reddit did an investigation and found out that the original claim could not be substantiated at all, and was in fact made by a new account. Further, they also found that at least one person offering a similar story was lying about who they claimed to work for. I tried posting a link but it didn't accept my comment. It's on the /r/ gaming board right now, titled "Regarding Xbox One and Allegations of Vote-Rigging".
But, the work has been done. Microsoft is now proven to be paying for social engineering...by a completely anonymous internet comment that has not one single shred of supporting proof. The funny thing about the comments under that article is that the majority of the skepticism
Not saying that they do not do it, but to cite this account as "proof", all based on what is, until proven otherwise, complete bullshit....is that standard editorial policy on this site?
It used to be said that a lie can circle the world twice before the truth has a chance to get out of bed. In today's world, I think it's more like 2000 times. Way to accelerate the process.

Samsung is the worst culprit of all of them, Samsung even hired people bashing its competitors and even to a point by making up false complaints of competitor's product such as HTC. This kind practice was exposed recently in a TV show in Taiwan.
What MS did was very mild indeed (comparing to Samsung) and not really sophisticated.

I'm sure this cannot be true. Microsoft is a wonderful company with an outstanding moral code and un-tarnished values. Maybe all these people just like Microsoft a lot! It's not hard, as they bring an un-paralleled combination between next gen gaming and a media powerhouse! All for the low low price of $499

Thing is, I've been accused - multiple times - of being an MS paid employee because I actually quite like Windows 8 and am vocal about it. Makes one wonder how much MS was paying me when I was quite negative about the Windows phone (I own a Lumia 900) in other posts on this site...

Talking points are marketing babble, yes, but frankly, sometimes people actually like the things about a product that they market. I've seen dozens of people get accused of being paid to post who, to me, just looked like regular posters who happen to like a product...

You frequently see utterly ridiculous bashers of major companies and their products. Literally, the outspoken, histrionic hatred for something like Windows 8 is the type one would expect to see for genocidal dictators or pandemic high mortality plagues. Instead, people *HATE* something because it doesn't have a start menu and they have to click "desktop" once to get to the desktop. Is it such a shocker they you'd see similarly ridiculous positive feeling about such a product as well? As much as there are stupidly histrionic haters, there are also legitimate uber fanboys. Most of the times you swear someone is being paid by a company, they're not...
