Microsoft needs to open up the Desktop portion of Windows RT so developers can make ARM versions of Desktop applications without people having to jailbreak to make them work...

[citation][nom]nikolajj[/nom]Well, that IS the only problem with Windows RT (and pro). Its new, so people dont understand it and they dont wanna try to. Like people are with most changes (Facebook knows thes). All the new Windows products are great, but they just lack the user base, nothing more.[/citation]

Remember when XP was new... the sky was falling back then. Now the kids have grown up, or have they?

Just for the record. I have iPad1-3, Nexus 7 and RT. RT beats iPad and Nexus in productivity. It all comes down to what you expect of your machine. Ok, Office RT is not a full fat Office suite, but it does a good job for me and, I suspect, most people out there.
I have upgraded my machines I mostly use to Windows 8 since its launch (having tried Pre-release). For desktop, if you learn the short cut keys and set the desktop properly, it is very usable. I don't think I am missing Windows 7.

I liked win xp and I don't care for win vista or 8 when you have more clicks and more moves to do the same command as win 7 or xp why bother but I do own win 8 why a 42 dollar purchase how many times I log into it????? maybe 1 time a month for updates running dual systems 7 and 8 side by side why do I choose 7 because it works that's it yes win 8 does too with more strokes of the keyboard or mouse even using add on apps to bring it back to the like windows os. So the big questions is even with RT is it better enough to entice people to move away from what there use to I have been around since the dos days pre win 3.1,Yep played with Linux and all the os since then like many of you folks here it does remind me in a small way of win 3.1 just cleaned up with the tiles just my thoughts but if I have to work hard to get from point a to point b whats the point in owning a rt or win 8 version? Just my 2 cents worth you can smash bash burn my house done after this statement but I had to say what is on my mind folks.

[Shift] and [.] One key is on the lower left, the other is on the lower right. Try them, then get back to us.

[citation][nom]JackFrost860[/nom]What does RT stand for? I asked Bing but it came up with Ripe Turd?[/citation]

Really Terrible?
Rank Technology?
Ridiculous Tiles?
Revolting Theory?

[citation][nom]apache_lives[/nom]I take it no one here has actually owned or used an RT tabletId much rather a fully functional RT tablet then an Ipad or Android toy, i can actually use an RT tablet for proper work[/citation]

You do that. And when its time to power down, put it on the desk next to your LISA.

Sounds like executives with head in the sand or in the clouds, oblivious to what the consumer is asking for. It is like the tablet and smart phone revolution, those generally succeeded by a major industry push, reasonable ease of use and subsidizing on the phone side. The larger screens were easier to see and the smart parts made life a little more interesting, so most people didn't complain. The formula was reasonably cheap choices and easy to use. Come MS and expecting it has enough pull to make consumers "rethink" their choices. They provide devices that are neither cheap and more difficult to use from the desktop Windows 8 standpoint. How is this a going to succeed?

Only fools count sunk costs. Microsoft should either commit to RT fully and burn the ships (no legacy desktop, no legacy office, replace WP8) or let it die. Even WP8 is doing better, with more users and better dev support and better first party apps.

There are bookstores that have sold more tablets.

They should 'double down' on updating their legacy desktop and Office suite. It's been too long without full rewrites. There are too many options now that are newer and better suited to the current cloud and social era.

Microsoft is showing how all their talk of innovation over the years was a lie. They bought, borrow, and blatantly ripped off their way to success. Now, they're trying to innovate again (remember Bob?) and it just shows how untalented they are. Ballmer is a freakin' idiot that needs to be shot.

Reality: most people DO NOT spend $600+ for Microsoft powered hardware.

This includes the notebooks, the intel-Ultrabooks (lame) and of course the $900~1500 slate/tablets.
The ARM tablets don't do what is needed and is a bait & switch... the ATOM tablets are much cleaper at the $600~700 price range... but is TOO slower for a power user and still to expensive for what makes iPad and Android tablets at $250~500 do very well.

Microsoft is a about to go... extinct.

It takes time to adjust to the changes on windows on the user's side and the purchase of Dell needs to be factored into account as well. many computer manufacturers do not like to see a competitor in Microsoft.
