[citation][nom]wackyphill[/nom]Windows 7 is great. What you people don't like choice? Can't handle multiple options on what to buy? Choice...why is that bad?[/citation]
I hope that Windows 7 is great. And Yes I am all about the choice. But here is my problem with the choice that MS is offering:
1. You want useful feature A, but in order to get it you need to buy "crap #1" plus "crap #2"
2. You need feature B, but you are forced to buy even more crap software.

This is how the cable companies empty your pocket every month, but more and more people are canceling the cable. MS here is betting on wrong business model. Their problem is that Apple is doing bundling better and the people witch don't want to choose are switching to Mac OS X. On the other hand people that really like choice have alternative in other OSes including free Linux.

[citation][nom]wackyphill[/nom]Linux is a great OS for people who like Linux. Windows is a good OS for people who actually wanna get their s**t done.[/citation] This is very argumentative, but if you feel comfortable working with Windows good luck. Only please do not speak of other people. For example NYSE is all about business and they run Linux.

Totally agree with SAL-e.
First of all, it's not about freedom of choice, it's about Microsoft selling intentionally and artificially crippled software in order to make you buy the same thing twice (or even more times). It's not like you are buying a cellphone. It's a computer and even netbooks are more powerful than the ones around at the time of the XP launch and they want to give you a worse OS to use with it. Because in my view, a crappy, outdated and difficult to use OS interface is not an option anymore. And 3 softwares at a time? Does that count the antivirus? So you can't even have an email, browser and instant message application runing at the same time? Who would like to use an OS that doesn't allow you to do even that????

In conclusion, they should just release a home and a business versions with the option to install just the OS and any combination of the bunddle available so anyone who has a less powerful PC can have a faster boot and more free space without having a lesser OS.

Lol, the string of stupid comments in this thread is astounding. Every OS has it's place, and Windows most of all. It's not going anywhere. It's clear this thread was taken over my MS haters and Moron trolls alike, so I wont even bother posting any type of aurguments. Besides, I'm more than confident that my views on technology are 100% correct anyways, and I couldnt agree less with half these posts.

Get real guys.
Hating on MS stopped being a cool fad the minute it started, and now just lets serious people know who the idiots are.

Whats up with all these angry people...
If you don't like what Microsoft has to offer, just dont buy or use it. Plain and simple. Go run linux!
I like all three versions of microsoft and have them installed (XP,Vista,7) so I think its worth it. Same with linux, that also pwns. The updated version of Windows 7 RC 1 should have the option to disable many features such as indexing and IE8 after install. And for the people that use vista and complain how it is such a memory hog, you do know that it is possible to disable aero and even make it look like windows 98... 4GB ram for 44 bucks anyone? www.newegg.com

whatever you guys say may be right or wrong, but there's one reason why windows 7 will work.. compatibility and oems.. almost every single program in existence is created to work with windows, and then they mac os/linux compatibility is considered.. and don't forget gaming.. plus, buying a laptop or pc from companies like hp, acer, sony, whatever.. you can bet your life that it'll have windows, and the latest one at that..

so no matter what we the people say, we have no choice but to eat out of microsoft's hands.. until apple considers allowing its os to be bought off shelves and installed on any pc that is (putting aside software compatibility issues)

i don`t get it why linux fans come here to throw shit ? it`s an article about windows not linux so go back to your linux and make yourself a handjob because you feel good you`re not useing "M$" products. Vista SP1 x64 works wonderfoul on my machine and i see other people screaming blaaah i get blue screen even on instalation, have you ever thought is not the OS and its your PC the problem ? :) about the guys who say visual bling of the OS takes up resources ... well i feel sorry for you if you can`t afford more tha 1 GB ram on your PCs after all technology has advanced from the era of 2 MB computers and 40 MB HDD :)

Are they going to make Windows 7 Millenium Edition here or what? Three programs at once is a joke. Most end users have more than three programs running w/out a windows open (AV, IM, VPN, Anti-spyware, etc.) already when their machines boot up. Selling something this crippled will only make people angry and M$ can only lose face from it. I thought WinXP Home with it's admin and networking limitations was a foul joke. Won't touch Vista, and if I had too it wouldn't be less than Vista Ultimate.

This Apple's OS model is probably the best available right now. One OS that if frequently updated and appears to become better over time. MS makes a real OS, then sells various crippled versions of it for less. They should at best be selling three versions of the OS, mobile, home, professional. Why make it more confusing and more limiting for your customers?

Second point off topic - remember the whole 'Vista Capable' debacle? Guess what - most of those low-end machines with the Intel IGP's weren't shipping with a version of Vista that had Aero anyways, so it really didn't make a big difference. MS should innovate and release new products, but they definitely need to trim the fat and provide a more coherent product line.

waw...

considering this sentence;
"While being the cheapest version of the OS, Windows 7 Starter Edition will be limited to running only three programs at a time."
it will be really "fun" to see someone build a virus with ability to launch 3 programs at a time and make Windows stop working...

3 programs at one time is non-sense! Microsoft is really evil if doing that...

well, to pay more than 120$ for a crap M$ vista home is a HUGE WASTE OF MONEY ! a home user for his home applications doesn't need a 120$+ OS. Ubuntu/fedora/opensuse are far better and stable on long term then microsoft. ubuntu is even shipped free. who needs more ?

350$+ Office kit ? you got to be joking. openoffice is far enough for everyday user.

games ? sauerbraten, alien-arena, openarena ... are funnier than a lot of 50$+ games. games today are cr@p. everyone of them needs a nuclear plant, but graphics/performace aren't such good. everything is full of bugs. just look at GTA4. (40$ for it ? )

i'm absolutely not supporter of these paying craps like windows, ea games, ... . if they would cost max 10$ each, i would thinking about buying them. until that i'm sticking with my ubuntu, openoffice, sauerbraten, kicad, etc etc.

This wouldn't be a problem if M$ would simply create a compact operating system.

And for the record, with the exception of gaming, there is no purpose to using Windows, as a Mac, Linux, and other OS's simply do a better job with a smaller footprint.

It is frustrating to spend tousands of dollars on something that is supposed to be improved over his predecessor while the only thig MS has done is move crap around and you find out that what you have before was fine: im sticking to xp for a while

The only stupid move here by MS is the restriction to 3 programs ... that totaly makes no sense at all.

This is extortion. In most cases I'm not given the choice of picking my own OS and will now even be forced to pay for a PC with a wilfully crippled OS. In fact, I hope the EU goes after MS and assorted hardware manufacturers... I know a lot of people will disagree, but as a long time Linux user I think it's sheer insanity to being able to buy a PC (especially laptop) without paying Microsoft and having a free choice of OS.

At least I know about this artificial limitation, but a lot of people are going to buy a laptop not realising they have been screwed over by Microsoft for having limitations placed upon on how they use their computer.

I hope its not referring to background programs as well. Windows Defender, Anti-Virus, are already 2 essential programs that Windows harasses you to protect yourself from ... Windows. lol

[citation][nom]m3kt3k[/nom]WOW Let me know when linux has even 10% of the desktop share and you may have a chance. What alot of you 1337 DUD3'5 dont get is that while there are different versions of windows THEY ALL RUN THE SAME SOFTWARE. office 97 Still works on vista. My 3d software works on everything from 98 to W7. It just works. My grandmother and parents can call with a question and I can rattle the answear off without pause. Walmart tried to sell linux based machines and it was a disaster. People think it was because the lindows windows link. BAAA wallmart could have done what they wanted but the sales were just sad. AS far as OSX PLEASE. Your drinking the coolaid if you think for one sec that Apple is somesort of white knight. In many ways Apple is MORE evil then M$.[/citation]

you are a morom, thanks god you are not the one who dictate the market, the ones who dictated the market are the companies who buy windows, and if those company see that most of their resources is going into IT Software without the R&D.

you could what will happen. Companies will only look for something more affordable or maybe free. And that is where linux will play it hands.
Linux work and compatibility is growing more and more everyday that pass.

i installed a distro of ubuntu and was surprised with the easy of the installation i thought i would be hard as about 8 years ago when i first installed one distro of linux that was super difficult.

I'm Running that distro of ubuntu flawlessly..
i'm also running a free exchange clone on my Linux Centos. (Free exchange clone) all the compatibility with outlook for those who already have outlook.

do you know how much monies have linux bringed to my pocket.. when im able to setup a Free mail server and i only need to buy the hardware. i deploy a Postpath server in one of my clients and they are super happy with the solution
i save them let me see.

1- 3,600 in 2 windows server 2008 (with a free copy of linux)
2- 10,350 in 230 cal at 45 each.
3- 15,110 in 2 copy of exchange 2007
4- 11,730 in cal for exchange 2007 that is let me see = 44,195 Taxes included

my actual value was around = 4600 (Hardware and software)

so the net saving would be equal = 39,595.00

5- Plus the save in hardware that i needed for the deployment that was a lot a lot less than what i would have needed using exchange 2007

i wounder when would you do an investment like that for your house.
i bet. (never)
wake up (is business who dictate the market)

The ROI by using Linux is nice...if you're familiar with the product.

For the average Joe that wants everything to "just work," it can be hit or miss. When drivers aren't included for various pieces of hardware, can the average Joe get their hardware working, or will they just get frustrated and switch back to Windows?

In other words, for the computer geek that wants complete control, Linux is great! That part of me agrees with some of the Linux zealots.

However, like any other zealot, they only think about their own interests and assume that the interests of the community as a whole mimics their own.

Ubuntu is getting closer to being user friendly, but it's not quite there yet. Until there is a Linux distro written by someone (or a group of people) with an active extroverted social life that VALUES the differences between people rather than MAKES FUN OF IT, Linux will continue to be right where it's at.

Linux definitely has its place on servers. After all, the end user shouldn't even be messing with servers directly. If their workstations act as a user-friendly frontend, then we're good! However, Linux for the home user still has a long way to go.

i couldn't agree more..
but remember the windows first started as a solution for business not for home computer.

and is happening the same with Linux. is growing more and more in the business side.

I been in office set up by some colleagues, where they run mainly Linux in the desktop. the application they use is web base = (where the market is going now and were it will stay in a very near future ) The open office is very strong now. for normal office work (is more than perfect, user friendly interface ) compatible with Microsoft office file.
word processor, spreadsheet with wizard macro creator.

the more people use a system, the more standardized it get.

i don't like to give number
but i bet that ubuntu should have 60% of the Linux desktop market.
and ubuntu had grown in one year what the other distro has taken 8 to 10 year to develop.

Linux keep only growing and growing (while Microsoft are making vista).

I love Microsoft but they are making far to many mistake. And pissing us the costumers too much.

3 Programs? LOL what a brilliant marketing scam. I'm sure the lowest version + upgrade fee is more than just buying the upgraded version first.

well just wait till it will be 50/50 or smth then we will se what will develop better :)

[citation][nom]ohim[/nom]i wanna see you guys makeing proffesional video editing under linux[/citation]

One of the Best system for professional video editing is Macos which is another unix\Linux.

and Avid/Premiere/Eidus/Fina Cut Pro works on linux too no (NOT)? :)btw never heard of this Macos you speak of.

If you people think MS is ripping you off. Consider they mat 17 billion in profit last year. If you add up all of the profits of microsoft the "evil" corporation it doesn't equal the increase in federal spending this year.

Heck, the government could give everyone a $250 copy of windows each year for the next 15-20 years for the same price.

Who is really ripping you off?
