hey guys i have some troubles with my build. i am almost sure that a new MB will solve it, but before i buy a new one, i just wanted to hear you guys 😀

so my problem comes to overclocking with my fx 8370. currently i am running at 4,4 ghz at 1,337v
during Intel burn test the cpu throttles down at 55 c which is reasonable annoying, and disabling thermal throttling in bios does not solve it. but what wonders me is that it is able to get that high on my cooler :??: cryorig H5

i have reapplied the thermal paste but not mutch help there. i will say it's safe to go further that 55c right? about 70c max? :ange:
i read that my motherboard did not have the required VRM for this CPU it's only 4+1 and they are getting quite hot. i strapped my heat sencor from my fancontoller on to the heatsink and its reading 50-60c during gaming :kaola: that's not good is it??? :ouch:

i will say that i have a good airflow in my case three 140mm intake, three 120 and one 140 outtake :pt1cable:

another think that concerns me is the two different CPU temps, one high and one low, which one tells the truth? 😛

and another thing, im hearing a sizzling sound, like the sound of an old HDD but more aggressive and silent. i think it's coming from the PSU. it's there when the GPU is under load. Should I be worried??? 🙁

i think that was about it, thanks in advance 😀

my setup:
MB: Asrock FX990 extreame 3
CPU FX8370
GPU: gigabyte gtx 980 windforce (not the G1 with tha fancy backplate) OC to 1500 mhz 😍
PSU: corsair cx750
CPU cooler: Cryorig H5 (180W)
case: corsair graphite 760t
RAM: Kingston genysis 1600 2x4gb
SSD: samsung evo 850 250 gb
HDD: seagate 1tb
OS: win10

note: the temps are after a shot burn test

Solution
That chip is power hungry when overclocked and you have 2 problems. 1 is yes a 4+1 VRM motherboard is not good for overclocking that chip, and 2 the Corsair CX series PSU is known to have issues when pushed especially that you are overclocking your GPU as well.

Are you using this version of Intel Burn test?

http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/intelburntest.html

Also did you try monitoring your CPU using AMD Overdrive. I ask because many times the temp monitors can be incorrect in other programs with AMD CPU's. Overdrive shows thermal limit which is the difference between the max temp and the temp you are at. So for example 0 is hot 50 is cold. The thermal limit on that CPU should be around 72 deg C.

Anyway assuming the...

Anyway assuming the same data, it sounds to me like your VRMs are overheating so the first thing would be to replace the Motherboard. After that you should consider PSU replacement if you want to push the overclock. That Corsair CX will work for a while but it will fail soon.

i tried the AMD overdrive, but it shows the temp strange. it says thermal margin, it was high while idle, and lowered down under stress :??:

i have looked on some MB one is a ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 witch i have read good things about, but i dont like the color of it. and the other one is a Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5 R5 (rev. 1.0) which i like the look of, but im not sure it is as good as the Sabertooth :sarcastic:

which PSU will you recommend. i have a GTX 770 laying around that i will add to the system when DirectX 12 becomes a reality in games. 😀

Read what I wrote again, Overdrive shows Thermal Margin, the thermal margin is the Max temp for your CPU (about 72 degrees), the number it shows in the system is the DIFFERENCE between your temp and the max temp. So for example you screenshot shows 51, that means your temp is 72 - 51 which is 21 deg C. Like I said, the numbers will be different but are more accurate.

Either board will work for you well, my personal preference is the ASUS, I just like their quality better.

As for a PSU this is the best deal going right now will give you all the power you need and then some and then you can use your 980 and also use the 770 as a PhysiX card. DX12 is not going to help you you can't SLI 2 different cards, but using the 770 for PhysiX will help alot

okay, i think that i will go with the Asus board 😀 but i will wait changing the PSU :heink: it have made this noise for over a year now i think (first i thourt i was the GPU) :pfff:

i am not sure about the directx 12 thing, but what i have understanded is that is split the workload over all the GPU's in the system, even if it is not SLI, and it should be able to use an AMD card together with and Nvidia if im not worng. it seams a bit go good to be truth. do you know anything about directx 12 ? :??:

The Dx12 thing is a feature Microsoft discussed that they will be implementing, the problem is, its not yet implemented, there is no timetable as to when, and it very well may require the game to specifically support it, so it could be a year or more before you even see the benefit as it needs to be programmed in. Plus its really only a benefit if the cards are similar in performance, yours are not. Use the other card for PhysiX. It will be a better benefit, that works right now.

thanks for the help, I appreciate it 😀
