to put this in simple terms I am running the 1.6 launcher with 2 versions in that launcher. the versions are a vanilla 1.6.2 and the other is the same with optifine installed. and here is my problem: I can run 256x sphax on the vanilla version with 30fps, however when I go to run the 256x on the optifine version it refuses to load and stays on default. the optifine version will run the 128x version of it. does anyone know why this is and if there are any solutions. the processor is an intel core 15 3570k at stock, and the internal graphics (intel hd graphics 4000). my 660 is being rma'd

it could the ram being used up. Optifine has quite a few features like anti aliasing and other such smoothing and graphical improvements so the default 1GB RAM allocation may not be enough to sustain a 256x texture pack and optifine improvements.

open up the launcher and click "edit profile" on the bottom left. at the bottom in "JVM arguments" change it to "-Xmx2G", or "-Xmx4G" if it still fails (also make sure the tickbox is ticked!). this changes the RAM allocation to 2GB or 4GB respectfully. also keep in mind that with HD texture packs they can take 10s of seconds to load so even though you have a high end system it still likes to take it's time.

hmmm, well unfortunately then it may just have run out of VRAM, after all, it is an inbuilt GPU and isn't specced up to handle what you're asking of it.

assuming you have an up to date graphics driver for the onboard graphics chip the only other suggestion is to look in the BIOS and see if there's any setting in there deciding how much RAM is reserved for the graphics. if that doesn't work.. well, I guess you'll have to drop down to a 128 until your 660 comes back!
