Folks:


A large number of companies are in the business of making Network Server
APPLIANCES. These APPLIANCES are compact servers
with specific functions (AntiVirus, Firewall, Etc) that are usually
rack-mounted with 1U Form Factor.

Companies like WatchGuard, TrendMicro, SonicWall, etc are all USING a
beautiful 1U CASE/CHASSIS in which to house their software.

I know that these companies are all buying their feature-rich 1U CASES from
some specialized hardware company.

* Does anyone know where I can purchase these Mini/Sub 1U CASES ?
I am interested in building my own APPLIANCES.

Either somewhere in Taiwan to your spec - and variable quality,
or somewhere in the USA - the USA does turn out some good cases.

If it's a "custom enclosure" check out your local metal fabricators who
specialise in sheet metal shear/press/etc construction or even automation.

If the application is Rackmount?
o You need 1U for an Appliance re coloco cost
If the application is consumer/general/standalone?
o Going for non-rackmount has many benefits
o Particularly re cost (Rackmount are pricey re tolerance to EIA specs)
o Particularly re cooling (easy to cool with 1 fan, vs an array of 40mm fans)

Custom metal is fine, but when you start talking about injection moulding
for fascia or panels - price goes somewhere off the planet for anything but
a production run more like an inkjet printer or similar global volume item.

I used to work for an Internet security software company in US. We
used to buy off-the-self 1U rackmount server from

chassis.
