hi all
I am now in the process of planning my first mini itx build and I am already suffering from information overflow

.GIGABYTE GA-Z170N-Gaming 5
.ASRock Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming-ITX/ac
.MSI Z170I GAMING PRO AC
.ASUS Z170I PRO GAMING
.MAXIMUS VIII IMPACT

did I miss something.

first things first, I need a motherboard. but which one?

I will appreciate all the help you can give me and everyone else interested in following the build as is evolves.

once we have come to an agreement on what board to get, then we could move on to the next part of this project

thanx again (in advance) for your help

Welcome back!

None of those links work 🙁. Personally, I'd say stop holding off and go for it! PC parts become 'outdated' quickly, but that doesn't mean they become instantly useless; my 9 year old Core 2 Quad is still almost as strong as my i3 4130!

And what GPU are you talking about? Nvidia's Pascal GPUs are still around half a year away, and that is light years in the PC building world. If there isn't a release due in a month, build it now. Plus, factoring in how long it'll take for the new GPUs to come to SA we can safely say that it'll be a good 1-2 months after that they are available - at highly inflated prices, if the 950 Pro tells us anything.

The GTX 280 is a 6 year old GPU. It fits into the exact same slot as the GTX 980Ti, it's modern day equivalent. Current GPUs are yet to saturate the PCI-E 3.0 bus, so I'm absolutely certain that nothing will change in that sense.

Could we have a link to the new thread? This one is a bit..... full 😀.

If cost is a major factor, give us a new budget and we'll work within it :).

hi thanx (it has been a while 😀 )
I was thinking about going old school on the other build and compact probably with a custom case (It should last a year or two as a gaming rig, I think and after that it could work as a entertainment console or something)
I would hope for it to last long enough for the pascal to be released and for the price to stabilize

Yep, posted a small list of questions on your other thread. Fill it out and we can get to work!

The time has come to build the rig.
At the moment I have settled on the following parts (they weren't available a while back)

Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming-ITX/ac

Welcome back! (Again 😀)

Those are good foundation parts. Let's work from there; How much is your budget (In ZAR)?

The only part I have an issue with is the cooler; there are better ones for the price that'll fit in an ITX build. Any idea of the case, RAM and extra peripherals? Does your budget need to include the cost of a monitor, keyboard + mouse and Windows? Are you looking at overclocking? I need a refresher on your needs; it's been quite some time :).

Good to be back :)
And thanx 4 joining me again.
This will go slow (using cheap ass phone, since my laptop tab and phone was stolen)

Fatal1ty seems to have the best combination of features out of all the boards? (power phases, m.2, USB...)
There is nothing better than the 950 PRO
6700k the best +oc
The gtx 1080 is a bit undecided (which custom gpu to pick)
I don't know what psu to use.
And I would like to get the best memory that would compliment the build.
No optical drive
No hdd
Still interested in a console type case.
I don't have to oc now, but can max out when required.

The Fatal1ty is a very good board; I tend to use it quite a lot in mid-to-high end builds. From what I see though, it isn't available in SA. The MSI below is one of the cheapest ITX Z170s but has all the features you need. The 950 Pro is the best M.2 SSD right now, though there are better NVMe (PCI-E) SSDs like the Intel 750 Series. They won't give you much of a perceptible difference in normal use though. Here's my reccommendation:

CPU: i7 6700K R 5,999.00 (Combo Price with Motherboard)
GPU: ASUS GTX 1080 FE R 13,849.00
Motherboard: MSI Z170i Gaming Pro AC R 3,799.00
RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury 1x16GB 2133MHz R 1,219.00
SSD: Samsung 950 Pro 512GB R 5,367.00
PSU: SeaSonic X-Series 750W R 2,120.00
Case: BitFenix Prodigy R 1,318.00
Cooler: Corsair Hydro H100i V2 240mm Radiator R2,091.00
Fans: BitFenix Spectre Pro 230mm R 409.00 (For the front intake)

Total: R 36,171

I spent some time ensuring that all parts are compatible with each other, seeing as it's a very small build. You shouldn't have any problems getting anything to fit. If you have any questions on the build, post them below :).

Sorry for the delay and abrupt text, I am really struggling with the cellphone.

Everything looks fine. If you like the motherboard, go for it. Check some of the prices against my list above; some things like the RAM and the CPU are significantly cheaper (There's virtually no performance difference between 2133, 3733 and 4000 MHz). Keep in mind that the Corsair SF PSU you picked, while very well built for a SFX PSU, is 600W instead of 650W. In either case, that means no overclocking your GPU or CPU, as the 1080 needs 600W minimum. If you're ok with that then you'll want to switch to a i7 6700 non-K to save some money.

As for the case, check out Cryorig's new Taku:

It'll be available around the end of the year.

What I like about Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming-ITX/ac
8 Power Phase design
1 Ultra M.2 (PCIe Gen3 x4 & SATA3) type 2260/2280
2 USB 3.1 10Gb/s (1 Type-A + 1 Type-C)
There is no other board with all these features,
And I can't think of any other features that the other boards might have that is not available on the fatal1ty?

This is what I found to try and help sizing the psu.
PowerASUS GeForce GTX 1080 Strix
Consumption up to 300W, additional 6+8 pin PCIe power required

GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1080 Xtreme Gaming
Recommended PSU
500W ( WITH TWO 8-Pin EXTERNAL POWER CONNECTOR)

(There's virtually no performance difference between 2133, 3733 and 4000 MHz). I just don't understand why they have them and be able to oc,
If there is almost no difference. And why they say
Works better in pairs but the 4000+ only 1.
8 or 16gb

Cryorig's new Takuya looks good with the monitor on it :)

I will no doubt look at the pricing but I want to sort out the components first (got to know what you want before shopping)
