Question Mining damaged motherboard?

I did some extensive mining with 2 GPU's on a Z170 motherboard. A few months ago both my monitors went into sleep mode even though the PC was still running. This started happening on and off until it got to the point where the system became very unstable with any GPU fitted, even with no mining and using a spare GPU that was never used for mining.
I have been using the system with CPU graphics for months now with no issues at all. I would like to fix the system so it can use a GPU again (no mining though!) It's running an i5-6600K.
Both GPU's used for mining are now in a new system and run with no problems at all. I'm thinking that the problem is damage to the motherboard from the mining heat. Does that sound like a reasonable assumption? Is there any way to test this?

Thanks in advance.
