MinWax Polycrylic vs Varathane!

Howdy,

Well, I have about given up hope of finding Varathane Diamond
Polyurethane Interior in a spray can. One lumber company said they
could order it but the price is very high. So, the only other
alternative to buying a spray gun, compressor, etc. is the MinWax
Polycrylic which has many of the same qualities of Varathane. It dries
clear with no yellowing, water-based, spray can, etc.

I talked to a fairly knowledgeable guy at a paint company that's been
around forever. He seemed to think that if I followed the same
application plan used for Varathane with a 30-day curing period, that
Polycrylic would perform just as well. He felt that essentially there
was very little difference between the two products.

I would very much appreciate your opinion please! I am getting near the
end of restoring a Spin Wheel playfield in which I had to perform
repairs on all three pop bumper areas and two kickout areas. I do not
wish to see all the hard work of paint matching destroyed.

Thank you very much,
Mark

I believe it is widely available in Canada, at most hardware stores, if
you are near the border.

I've wondered the very same thing. I had a hell of a time trying to
find Varathane. The one place local to me that carries it ran out and
said it would be 3 weeks before they'd have more. The next closest
place I could find was about a 45 minute drive away. I found a shitpot
of stores between here and there that carried Varathane, and in several
different fashions, but no one carried it in water based spray. I
found people that had it in a gallon, quart, etc. And I found people
who had the oil in spray, but water spray was very difficult to find.
And to make matters worse, EVERYWHERE I went, carried the Minwax
Polycrylic. So if anyone has any idea on how well the polycrylic
works, please share!

Lowe's actually carries Varathane, but when I asked them about the
spray can, they told me they couldn't special order it. It only took
them a few seconds to figure that out though. I worked in retail long
enough to know when I'm getting the lazy "go F yourself, I'm busy
standing here" type of answer... So I didn't push it any further and
just said screw it.

There are a few places online you can order it by the case (6 cans) for
about the same price that I've been able to find it locally.

2 of these carried it, but I don't remember which ones now:

www.doitbest.com
www.plazahardware.com

I don't know how well Polycrylic will work on a playfield, but I coated
my kitchen table with it. It's a "crackle-finish" type of table. The
coating took quite a while to dry and it still seems soft even after
years of dry time. It has held up well though, aside from the spot
where my 4-year old son sits and likes to bash his cup into the table.
Lots of little chips there!

do not use any finish with the word "poly" in the name.
though that may be an over-exageration, i would hold
to that rule. the problem is the the word "poly" denotes
a polyurethane, which you do not want to use. get the right
stuff, varathane, or move up to an automotive urethane.

Never used it on a playfield. Used it on an interior oak door. Results
were pretty good. There were some small puddles but that was from the
panels. The flat spots looked great. The brush made some bubbles in a
few spots.

It may be better for this product if you could spray it on. It
definently brighter than varathane.

For anyone looking for the proper Varathane by web order, you can get
it here http://www.wellspent.org/Product?p=426684 You need to order in
lots of 6 cans ($7.04/can + shipping). The bonus is that 8% of your
purchase goes to the charity of your choice. I sent mine to an
environmental fund (just seemed right given that I'm buying aerosolized
plastic :) I have also found that in the Northeast, Sears Hardware
stores carry it on the shelf (at least they do in Chelmsford, MA).

Reposted from a previous response I gave to a question on where to find
Varathane.

Here's an alternate, though at higher price
http://www.feedandfarm.hdweb.com/search.html?search=VENDOR%23000782&offset=0&per_page=10&sort=&format=

The key is to search for "Varathane 200081", with the number being the
part number of the exact type of varathane can you want to find.

Howdy,

Thank you everyone!

HeckHeck: I tried the feedandfarm link. They have the product with
an available count of zero. Sheesh!

Thanks all!

Better pricing here:

http://doityourself.com/store/6538623.htm

Order seven cans and the total is $56.59, including shipping ($8.08 a
can). Sure beats wasting a Saturday afternoon jawing with the Home
Depot lackeys.

I just received a case (6 cans) from Lowe's, special order, took two
weeks for 47.93 with tax. Just make sure you have the UPC number and
product name when ordering. The UPC number is 0_26748_20008_3 but I
bought the semi-gloss 0_26748_2008_2.
