It is possible to damage a cpu when you place it in a cpu socket of the motherboard.
But it depends on the brand of cpu used, the two cpu`s used are from AMD or INTEL.
But both have a different type of cpu socket.
Amd cpu`s use what we call the pin type where pins on the underside of the cpu, sit in the cpu socket.
Where as Intel use what we call a LGA format on the underside of the cpu, that are flat contact pads that touch wafers of the cpu socket when the cpu is fitted to it.
The retention arm is then used on a Amd cpu socket when the leaver on the side is pushed down flat to the motherboard Slides forward creating slight pressure on one side of all the cpu pins of the Amd cpu once fitted to the cpu socket to hold the cpu in the cpu socket.
Where as with an Intel cpu a metal square template is flipped down onto the outer edges on all sides of the chip.
Then the retention arm locks down onto the square template or Jig to hold the cpu down onto the socket and make contact with the wafers of the cpu socket.
When fitting a Cpu to any cpu socket of a motherboard.
If you look closely at the cpu you will see a small gold triangle marked in one corner.
If you inspect the cpu socket of the motherboard you will also see a triangle symbol marked on the cpu socket it`s self or on the motherboard in one corner.
Simply line both triangles so they match and are aligned.
If you follow this simple tip then it stops any damage from placing the cpu it`s self into a cpu socket in the wrong position, or orientation.
Doing so with a AMD cpu and placing it in the wrong orientation where both triangles do not match up will result in damage to the pins on the underside of the cpu it`s self. when the cpu socket retention arm is pushed down to the motherboard flat.
Often bending them out of alignment with the holes of the cpu socket.
Or in a worst case scenario snapping the fine gold pins off.
If this happens then the cpu even after it is placed in the correct orientation of the cpu socket after the mistake close to 90% of the time means a dead non working cpu.
