Missing files on hard drive?

Hello,

I have a Maxtor hard drive and I'm in the process of cleaning up after a serious viral crash. When I open the hard drive contents files I can see (when I pass the mouse over individual files) that they hold the expected content (byte size), but when I open the files they appear empty; Why is this and what can I do about it?

OK, Thanks! I've sorted it now. The files were hidden. I had already unhidden the files on others drives and hadn't realised I would have to do so for every drive.

No doubt, I'll be back with more questions. This process of system recovery/clean-up is a long one and my internet access is still not as it should be.
