I'm getting a capture device that says it captures in the mjpeg format. Is that format the same as mpeg? My software only captures in mpeg.

Solution

no. MJPEG is short for Motion-JPEG. It's just a series of JPEG images, not very efficient but well supported.

MPEG on the other hand is a standards body that has a large number of standardized audio and video codecs that are usually prefixed by the group name, ala MPEG-2, MPEG-3, and MPEG-4.
