I've been swapping some spare Inspiron 4000 parts into my old Thinkpad i 1400 (from '99!) and so far it's been pretty spiffy. The Thinkpad took inspiron's 128mb ram and 20gb HD without any fuss--and now I'm feeling adventurous, eyeing the delicate CPU with drool.

Would it be possible to swap the Inspiron 4000 processor into the thinkpad?

The Inspiron cpu is reported as "Pentium III mobile 900mhz". I took it out and the entire underside (not just a border) looks like a pincushion. It's marked "KP 900/256".

The Thinkpad i 1400 Celeron 400, MMX processor . It's disturbingly harder to get to the CPU so I'd like some veteran advice--with either laptops--before I spelunk into the thinkpad.

Doubtfull. The Thinkpad probably uses an MMCII cartridge with the CPU and chipset northbridge soldered to a small card.
