In the process of a new build and came across something i dont quite understand. Was hoping you all could explain this to me a little more laymen style. For my new build im using 2 new M.2 style storage as well as 1 ssd and 1 hdd.

This is the mother board im using (MSI Z270 MPOWER GAMING TITANIUM) So when on pcpartpicker i came across this compatibility concern and didn't quite understand what it meant.

The motherboard M.2 slot #1 shares bandwidth with a SATA 6.0 Gb/s port. When the M.2 slot is populated, one SATA 6.0 Gb/s port is disabled.

The motherboard M.2 slot #3 shares bandwidth with SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports. When the M.2 slot is populated, two SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports are disabled.

What does the above mean? I understand that 2 ports are gonna be disabled but does that mean i wont be able to set up my ssd and hdd ?

Will losing 2 sata ports make it more difficult in other factors of the build?

Questions may seem trivial but they are honest. Only my second build so im still a noob to most of this.

Thanks for the time and help.

okay see it like this there are 2 ports connected to 1 lane, if you use the 2 ports both will only carry at 50% of their max speed.

you have got plenty ports so you can easily add a sata ssd and a m.2. ssd and a hdd without losing anything :)

it means when you use a m 2 sata is disable 1 of the sata 6 port and if you use 2 of the m2 sata it will also disable 2 sata 6.0 port chck on the board manual on msi link to find what exactly it will disable .

Okay so if im understanding correctly i can use both the m.2 drives i have, as well as the ssd and hdd. But if i want the m.2 drives to run at full speed i do lose the options to run 2 of the 6 sata ports?

I was just uploading a picture. So which example would i use for 2 SAMSUNG 960 EVO M.2. 1 SAMSUNG 850 EVO 2.5" SATA III , and 1 Seagate BarraCuda Pro SATA

Below is the picture from manual

again sorry for the dumbness but i just want to make sure i set this up correctly the first time. Thank you for your help.

You may have 6 to 8 SATA ports on your motherboard. If you use the two M.2 you lose access to some but not all SATA ports. Kind of like you get 16X PCIE lanes with just one video card but with 2 each shares them for 8 X lanes.

Thank you both Scout and Ninja, one last thing and im all set. So according to the model. with all those drives in place the only available ports would be 3 and 4?

If i use the top right picture like you mentioned am i able to use sata 3 and 4?

so since im using the middle left, are all 6 sata connectors available for my ssd's and hdd's?

Yeah that's what it looks like.
